It is also impossible to say that it is constant and impermanent. It is also known by the six consciousnesses. That person can also be said to be substantially existent, because it can be said that he is the doer and the eater, and is associated with samsara and nirvana, bondage and liberation. It is also considered to be the object of self-grasping. This statement is also considered unreasonable. Because from the form, the inexpressible mind cannot be understood, the real is inexpressible, and cannot be understood. If some self were to be established as a real thing, then a real thing established like the mind would not be inexpressible. Therefore, this verse shows that it is impossible for the inexpressible to be substantially existent, but rather to be nominally existent. The reason for saying this is: Because your vase is not established as a real thing, its nature becomes inexpressible from form, etc., and I become inexpressible from the aggregates, it should not be thought that it is established by itself. Just as the vase cannot be said to be the same or different from form, etc., and is considered to be nominally existent, so too, I, like the vase, will become nominally existent, one should think in this way. Therefore, in this way, the refutation and establishment are shown approximately by two verses. Now, narrating that same and other are the basis of real things, and then attempting to refute the self by not being the basis of the dharma of real things. Your consciousness is not other than the nature of the self, but it is thought to be a different real thing from form, etc., and these two aspects are seen in the real thing, therefore, because I am not separated from the dharma of real things. If, according to your view, I am established as substantially existent, then it will inevitably be like consciousness, not other than its own nature, but will become a nature different from form, etc. This is also not existent. Therefore, because it is not the basis of the dharmas of real things, so like the vase, I am not existent. Because when one observes and analyzes in this way, it is impossible for a person to be substantially existent. Therefore, the basis of self-grasping is not a real thing, it is not other than the aggregates, it is not the nature of the aggregates, it is not the basis of the aggregates, nor is it corresponding to it. The object of self-grasping will definitely be destroyed.

It is not appropriate to consider it as an existing substance, nor should it be different from the aggregates, nor is it the nature of the aggregates, nor is it the basis of the aggregates. Alternatively, since this has aggregates as a basis, it is said that the aggregates are the basis. In order to clarify both the aspect of the basis and the dependent, it relies on both abbreviations of words. I should also not consider the self as being in conjunction with the aggregates. Therefore, it is acceptable to consider the self as imputed or non-apprehended, but one should not accept the self in the ways that have been described, because in this way the aggregates become established as a basis. Just as "this arises dependent on this," in order to prevent the establishment of conventional truth from being interrupted, just as it does not arise from causelessness, etc. Here too, if one truly relies on imputation, then in order to eliminate the faults mentioned earlier, in order to establish that imputation is dependent on the aggregates alone, in order to establish the worldly conventions, one should accept it, because one sees the imputation as self. In order to establish the self as merely imputed, in order to clarify the meaning of what has been said, an example from external sources is shown and explained: A chariot is not considered different from its parts. Nor is it identical to them, nor is it in conjunction with them. Nor is it in the parts, nor are the parts in it. Nor is it merely their collection, nor is it their shape, just like that. Therefore, here, the aspect of identity and the aspect of otherness, the aspect of the basis and the aspect of the dependent, and the aspect of being in conjunction with it, these five aspects have already been explained. The aspect of the collection and the aspect of the shape need to be established, therefore one should begin to explain these aspects. If merely the collection becomes a chariot, then when existing separately, there should also be a chariot. Although this has been said before, it is mentioned again in order to clarify it by stating other faults. Therefore, it is said, "Because there are no limbs, there is no possessor of limbs. Without limbs, the shape cannot be a chariot either." Because there is no possessor of limbs, the limbs do not exist, therefore the limbs are non-existent. Therefore, what collection of things would become a chariot?
