Since, as it is said, one imputes "I" through earth and so forth, therefore, they and it are not one, meaning that they are not different. It is not reasonable that it is merely their collection. Because the dharmas spoken of earlier cannot be the self, therefore, it is not reasonable to have a mind that clings to these dharmas as "I." When the aggregates are not the object of clinging to "I" in this way, and there is also nothing separate from the aggregates, therefore, since the object of clinging to "I" itself does not exist, the yogi, because he does not perceive a self, also completely knows that what belongs to the self is also devoid of essence, and having eliminated all compounded things, he will pass into nirvana without taking anything. Therefore, this discrimination is most excellent. If, according to the side that says the object of clinging is the aggregates and the mind, then as long as the aggregates arise, clinging to "I" will occur, because there is a thing that is the basis for clinging to a self. It is said: When one realizes no-self, one abandons the permanent self, and this is not considered a support for clinging to "I." Therefore, saying that by knowing no-self, one will certainly remove the view of self is very wonderful. If the self were permanent and the object of clinging to "I," then if it did not exist, clinging to "I" would be abandoned. If, in another object of clinging to "I," clinging to "I" ceases from seeing that there is no other thing, then, alas, you have done well. In order to clarify this meaning of mutual irrelevance through an example, the following is explained: Seeing that a snake dwells in a crack in the wall of one's own house, one dispels doubt by saying, "There is no elephant here," and thus eliminates the fear of the snake. Alas, this has become a dwelling in another's place. If the proximate cause of fear is already present, but one sees the fear that exists in it and does not remedy it, merely thinking that one is without fear by abandoning it, this is like finding a refuge, and one will eventually be seized by the snake. Because without an elephant, one cannot eliminate the fear of the snake. Similarly, according to this view that speaks of the aggregates and consciousness, then the permanent
