It is not the case that the aggregates are manifested as the self. What is it then? The Blessed One's intention is that there is no self that is different from the aggregates. This is in order to refute the tenets of the non-Buddhists in reliance on the conventional truth, and in order to clearly reveal the conventional truth without distortion. Furthermore, how is it certain that this is to negate a self that is other than the aggregates? Because in other sutras, it is also negated that form and so forth are the self. How is it negated? Because in other sutras it is said that form, feeling are not the self, neither is perception, formations are not, neither is consciousness. Therefore, it is not asserted that the aggregates mentioned in the sutra are the self. Therefore, from this sutra which says, "One should properly contemplate that these five aggregates of grasping are the self," it is certain that only the self that is different from the aggregates is negated. From that which negates that form and so forth are the self, it should be understood that it negates the self that is imputed in dependence, the object of the view of the collection of destructibles, the one possessing the aggregates of grasping. For that is the time to contemplate that very nature. Since if the grasper is not observed, then its object of grasping does not exist either, therefore it is proper to be without attachment even to form and so forth as the self. Because it is said thus in other sutras, therefore, it is not asserted that the aggregates mentioned in the previous sutra are the self. Furthermore, even if it is certain that this sutra teaching is a means of establishing, it is not able to show that the aggregates are the self. Why? Like this, if one says that the aggregates are the self, it is the collection of the aggregates, but not the essence of the aggregates. For example, when one says that trees are a forest, the collection of trees is a forest, but if each tree becomes a forest, it would be unreasonable. Likewise, the collection of aggregates becomes the self. Therefore, since the collection is nothing at all, it is not a protector, nor a tamer, nor a lord. Since those are not there, it is not a collection. As the Blessed One said, "The self is the protector of the self,

It is also one's own enemy. When good and bad are done, one is one's own master. Thus it is said, from which it is said that oneself is the protector and the master. When oneself is well tamed, the wise will attain the heavens. Thus it is said, from which taming is spoken of. The mere aggregate is not a real entity, nor is it the protector and the tamer or the master, nor is the reasoning established. Therefore, the aggregate is not self. If, because there is no difference from the aggregate-possessor, the result is understood to belong to the aggregate-possessors, therefore, the reasoning of protector, tamer, and master is established, if you think so, this is also not existent, because the fault has already been spoken of for this. Furthermore, at that time, the collection of limbs and places of it, will become a chariot, the chariot and the self are the same. In the Sutra it is also said: 'Self' is the mind of the demon, you are the one who sees. This aggregate of formations is empty, there is no sentient being in it. Just as the collection of limbs, relying on which the chariot is spoken of, similarly, relying on the aggregates, conventionally it is called a sentient being. Thus it is said. In that way, in the Sutra it is said that it exists relying on the aggregates, therefore, the mere collection of aggregates is not self. That which is imputed relying on something is not merely the collection of limbs that closely take the imputation, because it is imputed relying on it, like that which is transformed from the elements. For example, having made the elements the cause, blue and so on and eyes and so on, which are transformed from the elements, are imputed, but these two are not merely the collection of elements. Similarly, the nature of self, which is imputed having made the aggregates the cause, should not be merely the collection of aggregates. If it is said that it is the uncertainty of pots and so on, this is also not existent, because it is not established that pots and so on are merely the collection of form and so on, and because the refutation and examination are the same. If it is said that the collection of spokes and so on is not a chariot, then what is it? When the spokes and so on have a special shape, then the name of chariot will be found. Similarly, if you think that merely the arrangement of form and so on is self, this is also not existent.
