Because there is no grasping. If it exists separately from the aggregates, then at that time it would be grasped as being established separately, but it is not like that. Therefore, there is no self other than the aggregates, because apart from the aggregates, grasping it is not established. As it is said: "The self is not reasonable apart from the aggregates of appropriation. If it were other, without appropriation, there would be grasping, but there would be no grasping." And similarly: "If it were other than the aggregates, it would become without the characteristics of the aggregates." So it is said. Not only is there no self that is separate from the aggregates, but also, it is not reasonable for the basis of the world's ego-grasping mind, because it is not of the same kind, and it is also a view of self. Those who do not grasp the appearance of such a self also become views of self, such as "I" and "mine," due to the difference of manifest attachment. Therefore, this self is not reasonable as the basis for grasping the self as separate from the aggregates. If someone thinks that those who do not know the distinctions of permanence and non-arising, etc., also have a view of ego-grasping with it as its object due to the power of previous habituation, that is also not the case. Because it is only some people who have a view of self because they have become habituated to their treatises. Those who do not have previous habituation also see ego-grasping arising here. For example: "Those who have been born as animals for many eons, certainly have not seen this unborn, permanent self, but ego-grasping is also seen to arise in them, therefore there is no self other than the aggregates." Any sentient beings who, even in countless eons, cannot be liberated from the animal realm, have not seen such a self. The word "also" includes those born in hells, etc. Those who have not seen such a self also see ego-grasping arising, so who among the wise would cling to the self as the basis for such ego-grasping? Therefore, there is no self separate from the aggregates. Here, one's own school says: "Because there is no self established other than the aggregates, therefore, the object of the view of self is only the aggregates." Because, as explained before, there is no self established separate from the aggregates, therefore, the aggregates.

Because there is no self established other than the aggregates. The object of the view of the perishable collection (Skandhadṛṣṭi, the wrong view that considers the five aggregates as "I") is only the aggregates. Therefore, it is said that I am only the aggregates. This school is of those who are revered by many noble ones in their own sect. Furthermore, some think that the five aggregates are the basis of the view of self, and some think that one mind is the basis of the view of self. Some say that the five aggregates, namely the form aggregate, the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the formation aggregate, and the consciousness aggregate, are all objects of the view of the perishable collection, and that the attachment to self arises from this. As it is said in the sutra: "The Blessed One told the monks, any śrāmaṇa or Brahmin who truly observes 'I', they truly observe these five aggregates of grasping." Therefore, in order to clarify to them that your view is directed towards the collection of perishable nature, and not towards the self or what belongs to the self, it is said that all views that fall into the category of self and what belongs to the self are called the view of the perishable collection. Others think that the mind is the "I", because "One's own self is one's own protector, who else can be the protector? Those who tame themselves well, the wise will attain the good realms." In this verse, the mind is spoken of as "I". Why is this? Because there is no "I" different from the aggregates, and other scriptures also say to tame the mind. "Taming the mind is good, taming the mind brings happiness." That is the meaning. Therefore, the basis of grasping at self—the mind—is called "I". To this, a reply should be made: If the aggregates are the self, then, because the aggregates are many, the self will also become many. The self will become a substance, and the observation of it, because it is directed towards a substance, will not be inverted. Then, according to the view of those who think that the aggregates are the self, since the aggregates are many, the self also becomes many. According to the view of those who think that the mind is the self, due to the difference of consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, or due to the arising and ceasing of consciousnesses in each moment, the mind is also many, so the self also becomes many.
