In any dream, there are no real objects, yet those with deluded minds cling to appearances. Although like a mirage city it appears, this city is not in the ten directions, nor is it in any other place. It is established merely by the name of a city. Likewise, the Sugata sees beings. Those with the perception of water, even seeing a mirage, there is no water in it. Similarly, washing with complete realization, one perceives suffering in what is not suffering. In an extremely pure mirror, just as an image appears without inherent existence, understand the trees and all phenomena in the same way. As it is said in the scriptures, although forms and so on are not born with inherent existence, they become objects of attachment for the world. The child of a barren woman does not exist, so this is not established for you from yourself. For us, this is not a matter of contention, because we acknowledge that forms and so on arise with inherent existence in the relative truth, but we do not deny it in the ultimate truth. Why is that? Just as the child of a barren woman is not born of its own nature in that place, nor does it exist in another world, so too, the essence of all these things is not born in that world itself. Why is that so? Therefore, it is taught in this way that all phenomena are from the beginning peaceful and free from birth, and by nature have attained complete nirvana. Therefore, there is no constant birth. Because there is such a scripture, therefore there is no constant birth. The scripture states: The turning of the wheel of Dharma is from the beginning peaceful and unborn, the nature of nirvana, these phenomena are taught by you, protector. That is because all phenomena are peaceful because it is the realm of peaceful wisdom. And why is wisdom the realm of peace? Because it is said to be unborn, meaning it is unborn. Because it is unborn, therefore wisdom is the realm of peace. And why is it unborn? Because it is said to be naturally in nirvana. If something had a nature, it would be born, but since that nature does not exist, what would be born? This is not born at any time.

This shows that. It is not that later arising arises from what did not arise earlier, nor does it change again from later arising. What is it then? It is that self-nature itself is completely extinguished. By mentioning the word "initially," it is not that they are not born only in the state of the wisdom of the yogis. What is it then? This shows that even in the state of worldly terms before that, these dharmas are not born by their own nature. The word "initially" is a synonym for the word "first." It should be understood that this refers to the state of worldly terms. Thus, when turning the wheel of Dharma, you showed these dharmas, which is the praise of the Bhagavan by the Bodhisattva Arya Sarvanivaranaviskambhin with excellent qualities. One's own sect considers this not to be a refutation. Why? Because they promised: These pots and so on do not exist in themselves, just as they exist as widely known in the world. Similarly, all things change, so there will be no fault similar to the son of a barren woman. If it is assumed that the basis of establishment—earth, water, fire, wind, form, smell, taste, touch, etc.—exists, therefore, it can be considered that the pot has a cause. Then, according to what, everything is just a fabrication, and there is nothing that is the basis of fabrication, then the fault similar to the son of a barren woman will appear, which is unavoidable. This is also unreasonable, because it is impossible to establish the basis of fabrication. As it is said: Without form, etc., how can there be a pot? Similarly, without wind, etc., form does not exist either. And so on. Similarly: Earth, water, fire, and wind, each is not self-nature. Without the three, there is no each. Without one, there are no three either. If it is said that without the three, there is no each. Without one, there are no three either. Each is self-existent, how can aggregation arise? And so on. Just as one does not want impermanence to arise from permanence, one does not want reality to arise from reality either.

It is not appropriate to arise without a cause. As it is said: If things arise from a permanent nature, how can they become impermanent? The characteristics of cause and effect are not compatible, and this is never seen. Thus it is said. Therefore, just as what is observed, relying on a collection of things, such as observing an image in a mirror; as observing a house relying on an observed pillar, etc.; similarly, observing a forest relying on the support of trees; as in a dream, observing the sprout of an unarisen nature arising from a seed of an unarisen nature. Likewise, the observation of all observable things should also be dependent on the observed things. As it is said: Just as the emanation of the Tathagata, and so on, like a city of Gandharvas, like a mirage, like a dream. Thus it is said. Therefore, this is not a fault. Here it is said: If you have prevented arising from self, other, both, and without cause, then how do you ascertain that the conventional arising of consciousness and sprouts, etc., arises from ignorance, actions, and seeds, etc.? It should be said thus: Why is it that things do not arise from no cause, from Ishvara, from causes, etc., and from self, other, or both? Therefore, they arise dependently. Why is it that, as explained before, the arising of things does not arise from their own nature, nor from Ishvara, time, particles, nature, purusha, or the son of the desireless one, etc., nor does it arise from self, other, or both? Therefore, this arises because of that, and that is all. It depends on it in order not to cut off the conventions of the world. As the Bhagavan said: This is the indication of the Dharma, namely, this arises because of this, this arises because of this, that is, actions conditioned by ignorance, etc. Likewise, this arises because of this, like short because of long; this arises because of this, like light arises because of a lamp.
