The Tathagatas, in order to subdue those who cling to the "self" spoken of by the non-Buddhists, taught the Tathagatagarbha, and therefore taught the Tathagatagarbha. In order to make those sentient beings who are immersed in the view of falsely imagining a real "self" have the intention of abiding in the realm of the three liberations, and to quickly realize the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, what should be done? Also, from that, Mahamati! The nature of emptiness, non-arising, non-duality, and no-self-nature is contained in the sutras of all Buddhas, thus it is declared. Therefore, in this way, all that is claimed to be definitive by those who call themselves consciousness theorists is clearly shown by this scriptural statement to be provisional. In order to clearly show the provisional meaning with reason, it is said: If there is no object of knowledge, then knowledge is clear, and it is easily obtained, as the Buddhas said. If there is no object of knowledge, then knowledge is rejected and established, so the object of knowledge is rejected first. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, gradually lead those to be tamed into no-self-nature. Among them, those who have done good deeds easily enter the Dharma nature, so it is a means to enter the Dharma nature, just like the initial statement of giving and so on. Similarly, rejecting the object of knowledge is also a means to understand no-self, therefore, the Bhagavat only said to reject the object of knowledge before, because those who know the object of knowledge as no-self easily enter the knower as no-self. Those who know the object of knowledge as no-self-nature, sometimes they can know the knower as no-self-nature by themselves, and sometimes they can know it by just a little indication, so the rejection of the object of knowledge was said before. Wise people should also observe in this way, thus it is declared. After understanding the history of the scriptural statement in this way, one should know which sutra is not that meaning, but has an explanatory meaning. One should also understand that what is said is provisional, and thus guide accordingly. One should know that what has the meaning of emptiness is definitive. One should know which sutras are distinguished by non-arising and so on, dependent origination.

Those things that do not actually manifest production, how do they become the cause of entering into selflessness? It should be explained as follows: As it is said, "If the aggregates are not deluded by the eye, how can those aggregates be deluded by the eye? When this is said about form, you should stop clinging to form." It is also said in the sutras, "The meaning of impermanence is the meaning of non-existence." One should also understand the definitive meaning of emptiness, as it is said, "As the Sugata has explained emptiness, one should know the distinctions of the definitive meaning sutras. Whatever sutra teaches sentient beings, persons, etc., know that all those teachings are expedient." Likewise, it is also said, "In thousands of world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, although the words are different, the meaning is the same, but it is not possible to fully proclaim it. Having contemplated one thing, all those things will be cultivated. All the many teachings of all the Buddhas, all that has been fully taught, all phenomena are selfless. Whoever is skilled in meaning, if they diligently practice in this place, it will not be difficult to obtain the Buddha's teachings." Thus it is said. Likewise, one should also understand the extensive teachings in the sutras of the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence and others. To speak briefly, for example, a snake tied with a rope is observed as dependent arising, because it is not in that. That snake is completely established in things, because it is not completely observed. Likewise, nature is also completely observed in that which is dependent on others, nature is unmade, and does not depend on others. As it is said, nature is not made. The dependent arising that is grasped, like the observed image, is real in the realm of the Buddha, because it is not completely observed. Without touching the made nature of things, only the nature is manifested, and because of understanding that, it is called Buddha. Therefore, having understood the distinction between the three natures of imputation, other-powered, and thoroughly established, one should explain the intention of the sutras well.
