How can this be, to attribute the object to an external realm? In order not to fall into the abyss, the noble practitioners of compassion should firmly grasp it by severely suppressing it with the excellent secret mantra of scripture and reasoning. Therefore, in order to show that consciousness is impossible without an external realm, and in order to refute the mere existence of things, it is explained: If there is no object of grasping, and the grasper is also absent, and the other-powered reality is empty of both, by what will this be known to exist? It is not permissible to say that it exists even without being grasped. If the other-powered, which is empty of both grasping and being grasped, exists, then by what will you apprehend its existence? It is not reasonable for that itself to grasp that, because it contradicts acting on itself. For example, the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, and the tip of a finger cannot touch itself. Even a well-trained elephant trainer cannot ride on his own shoulders, fire cannot burn itself, and the eye does not see itself. That is also not grasped by another consciousness, because it contradicts one's own established tenets. If another consciousness is the object of consciousness, then consciousness itself will be destroyed. Therefore, in that way, its grasping does not exist in any way, and for what is not grasped, there is no existence at all. Here it is said: If the existence of grasping by others is not established, even so, self-awareness exists. Therefore, it exists because it is grasped only by self-awareness, if you say so. That is also not established, it is said: It is not established that it experiences that itself. It is not established that it grasps that itself. Here, some people, accepting the view of the Sutra School, in order to strongly establish self-awareness. Just as fire, when it arises, does not apprehend duality, but simultaneously illuminates itself and pots, etc., and a lamp also shows itself and things. Similarly, consciousness, when it arises near, does not apprehend duality, but also itself and the various objects

It is that which correctly cognizes. Therefore, self-cognition is definitely existent. Even those who do not wish to admit it must inevitably acknowledge self-cognition, otherwise, the later arising memory of "I did not see" would only be a memory of the object, and would not recall the experience of the object, "I saw." Why is that? Because memory is of an object that has been experienced, if the consciousness has not experienced it, there will be no memory. Because there is no self-cognition, for the time being, it itself has not experienced it. Other consciousnesses should not experience it either. Why is that? If other consciousnesses experience it, it would lead to the fallacy of infinite regress. For example, if one consciousness that ascertains blue, and the subsequent consciousness acknowledges that it ascertains it, then the consciousness of the consciousness that knows blue must also have another experiencer, and that experiencer must also have another, thus leading to the fault of infinite regress. Consciousness also cannot completely ascertain other objects, because all the continua of consciousness are objects of other consciousnesses, and all sentient beings are one continuum of consciousness. Consciousnesses arise sequentially, like piercing a hundred lotus petals, but because they enter quickly, they appear to enter simultaneously. Therefore, in order to completely avoid the fault of infinite regress, one must inevitably acknowledge self-cognition. In that way, the later arising memory of "I saw," which has both objects, can also be established. If the self-cognition, the nature of consciousness, is not realized, then there cannot be memory of that object. Therefore, from the later arising memory-consciousness of "I saw," it can be inferred that the later arising memory with both objects is born from experiencing the self-nature of consciousness and the self-nature of the object. Therefore, self-experience is established from later memory, and if there is self-experience, there is certainly another's freedom, so the statement that "who will know that this exists?" is reasonably answered with "this has been indicated."
