Not observed. That which is unobservable in the three times is not the eye faculty. If it is not the eye faculty, how should one call it? For example, an empty cup is neither false nor true, it is merely named as such. But in reality, emptiness is unobservable, and cessation is also unobservable. Similarly, the eye faculty is like cessation and emptiness, false, non-existent, and untrue. It has the nature of delusion, like enticing children, it is not true. It is merely named as such. But in reality, neither the eye nor the faculty is observable. This is because the Blessed One, having attained the wisdom of omniscience, established the name "eye faculty" in order to subdue those sentient beings who are attached to perverted views, but in reality it is not so. The faculty is devoid of inherent existence and empty of its own nature. Therefore, the eye is not the eye itself, and the faculty is not the faculty itself. Why is that? Because the eye is devoid of the inherent existence of the eye. Any dharma that does not have inherent existence is not a real entity. That which is not a real entity is unestablished. It is neither unborn nor unceasing. Names such as past and future cannot be applied. Blessed One, for example, a person laughs, rejoices, and plays in a dream at night, and when he wakes up from sleep, he remembers it, but even when he remembers it, he cannot find it. Why is that? Because even in a dream he could not find them, what need is there to mention when he wakes up from sleep? This is impossible. Similarly, the faculties are like dreams. Similarly, all dharmas are unobservable in their own nature. Therefore, they are said to be inexpressible. Thus, the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, and so on are explained separately like the faculties. So where is their inherent existence? Therefore, those who do not analyze the meaning of the Teacher's words, and without the power of wisdom, say that there is a discriminating consciousness, this should be refuted.

Ra said: If consciousness does not exist without an object, then how is it explained that yogis, according to the oral instructions of the guru, see the earth completely filled with skeletons? Yogis, according to the oral instructions of the guru, see the earth filled with skeletons, and there, all three are seen as unborn, namely, object, sense faculty, and consciousness. Why is that? Because this samadhi is taught to show wrong attention. Because it says, "This is attending to what is not reality." This should be acknowledged without hesitation. If it is not so, how are the objects of your sense consciousness? If it is not so, and the unpleasant also turns into the pleasant, similarly, if the mind focuses on that object, what is realized will not become false either. Just as when you watch a theatrical performance, etc., among those who focus their eyes on that object, how the visual consciousness of one arises with that aspect, similarly, it is the same for others. Just as when yogis or non-yogis look at objects such as skeletons, consciousness with that aspect will also arise, just like the consciousness of blue, etc. This samadhi will not turn into attending to what is not reality. Similarly, it is the same for those with impaired senses, and the consciousness of pus and blood seen by pretas in flowing water should also be understood in the same way. Just as it is said, "Due to the power of cataracts, one sees hairs," one should know that other similar things are also like that, and there is no need to elaborate. In short, just as the knowable does not exist, the mind also does not exist, understand this meaning. Just as the nature of the knowable does not exist, the mind with the aspect of the knowable should also not arise from its own nature. As it is said: "What is not known is not knowable, without that there is no consciousness, therefore, knower and knowable, you say are without nature." And, similarly, "Consciousness is like an illusion, said by the Friend of the Sun, its object is also like that, it is certainly the same as the object of an illusion." Thus it is said. Therefore, the demon of forgetfulness that speaks of consciousness as substantial.
