The karma arising from desire, the karma arising from hatred, and the karma arising from ignorance are manifestly performed by body, speech, and mind. That karma, once manifestly performed, ceases. When it ceases, it does not abide relying on the east, nor in any of the directions or intermediate points, and at whatever other time, when one is near the time of death, when the karma similar to that is exhausted, at the time when the last consciousness ceases. For example, like a sleeping like a virtuous woman of the human realm awakened from sleep, the mind manifestly turns to that. Great king, thus, when the last consciousness ceases and the first consciousness belonging to the part of arising, either among the gods or among the pretas, arises. Great king, immediately after that first consciousness ceases, the stream of mind similar to that which is manifestly about to experience the ripening arises. Great king, for that, no dharma transmigrates from this world to the other world, and there is no manifestation of death and birth. Great king, for that, whatever is the cessation of the last consciousness is called death. Whatever is the arising of the first consciousness is called birth. Great king, when the last consciousness ceases, it does not go anywhere. The aspect of arising belonging to the arising of the first consciousness does not come from anywhere either. Why is that? Because it is empty of inherent existence. Great king, for that, the last consciousness is empty of the last consciousness. Death is empty of death. Karma is empty of karma. The first consciousness is empty of the first consciousness. Birth is empty of birth, yet the karmas are manifest as not being wasted, as it is said. If one asserts that what is not inherently born ripens because it is inexhaustible, that is so. Just as ripening arises because it has not ceased, so too, from karma that has already ripened there is ripening, and because that karma is inexhaustible, from what has already ripened it will ripen again, therefore there is the fault of being endless.

Would you think it would turn out that way? That is not the case. Just as a place is not existent, although it is similar, a person with cataracts can clearly see hairs, just as that is not other things. Similarly, from maturity, one can know whether it will mature again. For example, just as a place is not existent, a person with cataracts can see the nature of non-existent hairs and so on. Just as that is not the form of things other than that, such as a donkey's horn and a mule's son, etc., the nature of karma does not cease, and it will definitely mature. This example shows that not only is karma not uncertain, but also that maturation is certain. Therefore, maturation is the result of negative black karma, maturation is virtuous, and it is seen to come from virtuous karma. Those who have no thoughts of virtue or non-virtue will eventually change, and doubt the results of karma. If the two karmas of virtue and non-virtue are without inherent existence, but even so, because hairs and so on can be seen with certainty, then a satisfactory maturation does not come from non-virtue, nor does an unsatisfactory one come from virtue. Liberation is attained by not clinging to virtuous and non-virtuous karma. Therefore, the Bhagavan, fearing that the conventional would be destroyed by slandering karma and its results to those individuals who discriminate with extreme certainty, said that the maturation of the results of karma is inconceivable, thereby preventing attachment to karma and its results. If the relationship between the results of karma is established in that way, then in the Lankavatara Sutra and other scriptures, what is said about the alaya-vijñana being the special basis of the power of limitless dharmas, the basis of all seeds, like the ocean for waves, the cause of the arising of all things, is it completely non-arising? It is not so, because it has been shown to those who should be tamed that it exists. Because the nature of all things follows it, it should be understood that emptiness itself is indicated by the term alaya-vijñana. Not only does alaya-vijñana exist, but also
