Although it exists in relation to that, it is not produced by its own nature. As it is said: When a mirror is extremely pure, how can it not have its own nature? The appearance of the image is the same, know that trees and all dharmas are like that. It is said like that. Therefore, in the two truths, also because there is no self-nature, they are neither permanent nor impermanent. Because of this, things are empty of self-nature like images, and precisely because of this, in both the ultimate truth and the conventional truth, also because there is no self-nature, there is no permanence or impermanence. As it is said in the scriptures: If there is self-nature, it is permanent because it is not non-existent. If it is said that it existed before but does not exist now, then it becomes a theory of annihilation. It is said like that. Similarly, if one admits that things exist, then one falls into the view of permanence and annihilation, because things are permanent and impermanent. It is said like that and so on. Similarly, like the emanation of the Buddha, it is emanated by the perfection of miraculous powers. When the emanation is also emanated, it is again like another emanation. Likewise, whatever the maker does is also like the appearance of an emanation. For example, an emanation makes an emanation, and the actions of the emanation are also like that. Afflictions, actions, and bodies, as well as the doer and the result, are like a city of gandharvas, like a mirage or a dream. In this way, by the analogy of emanation, it is shown that from the absence of self-nature, the absence of self-nature arises. Therefore, since there is no self-nature in both of these two truths, the view of permanence and annihilation is abandoned far away, and not only that, even though the actions have ceased and a long time has passed, the results and connections of the actions, in the continuity of the alaya consciousness, and the non-loss and attainment, etc., are also reasonable without any distinction. How is it? Why is it that self-nature does not perish, so it can also do without the alaya. Even when the action has ceased for a long time, one should also know that the correct result arises. If one asks how the result arises from the action that has ceased, then the answer is: the ability of the action that has ceased should be established.

In short, it is to understand the continuum of consciousness as the Alaya consciousness, or like the dominion of debt that does not waste other dharmas, or through hearing, or the consciousness that is imbued with the imprints of karma. According to the view that karma is not produced by its own nature, it does not cease, and it is not impossible for a result to arise from what is not destroyed. Therefore, karma does not perish, and the relationship between karma and its result will be very clearly explained. As it is said in the scriptures: Because karma does not arise, therefore it has no nature. Because it is unborn, therefore it will not be wasted. It is like this saying. It is also said in the sutras: The lifespan of a person is one hundred years, although it is said that one can live that long, the years are not piled up in a heap. Practice is also the same. Where it is said that there is no exhaustion, and where it is said that karma is exhausted, there is no exhaustion from the perspective of emptiness, and it is shown as exhaustion from the perspective of conventional truth. The meaning of what was said is explained through an analogy. Having seen the objects of focus in a dream, even a fool will generate attachment upon awakening. Similarly, even from karma that has ceased and has no nature, there is a result. As it is said in the Sutra of the Transference of Existence: Great King, for example, a person dreams in his sleep of enjoying himself with a beautiful woman of the land, and when he awakens from his sleep, he remembers that beautiful woman. Great King, what do you think? That person dreamed of enjoying himself with the beautiful woman of the land in his dream, and when he awakens from his sleep, he remembers that beautiful woman. Is that person of the nature of wisdom? He replied: Blessed One, no. Why is that? Blessed One, because the beautiful woman of the dream does not exist and cannot be seen, how could there be enjoyment with her? Thus, that person will become a person with a destiny of poverty and fatigue. The Blessed One said: Great King, similarly, ordinary people who have not heard the teachings, upon seeing forms with their eyes, become attached to those forms that bring pleasure to the mind. Having become attached, they generate desire. Having generated desire, they generate craving.
