That which follows the doer is habit, which is the limit of affliction, habituation, root, and habit, these are different names. Even if afflictions are eliminated by the unpolluted path, all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot eliminate them. Just as sesame oil and flowers, etc., have been removed, but when vases and cloths, etc., come into contact with them, subtle qualities can still be discerned. Thus, even if afflictions are eliminated, because habits remain, an Arhat who was previously a monkey will still jump and walk, and one who was previously a Brahmin will still speak contemptuously. Although the Blessed One has restrained them, they have not been corrected, which is observable. Among them, the habit of ignorance is an obstacle to the complete examination of knowable objects, and the existence of habits such as desire is also the cause of such actions of body and speech. The habits of ignorance and desire, etc., can only be reversed by the all-knowing one and the Buddha, but not by others. Therefore, the complete elimination of the remaining habits of affliction, and the elimination of the affliction that connects habits, whereby the wisdom of the Buddhas is unobstructed in all things, is established as the power of the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements. As it is said: 'Son of good family, moreover, the Tathagata has exhausted all defilements, my birth is exhausted, the pure conduct is established, what has to be done has been done, and I do not know another existence beyond this.' Having attained the unpolluted, the liberation of mind and the liberation of wisdom, he abides having directly realized it by his own direct perception. The Tathagata's knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements is pure, immaculate, completely pure, luminous, and has thoroughly destroyed all connections of habits. The exhaustion of defilements of the Shravakas is limited and has not completely destroyed habits. The exhaustion of defilements of the Pratyekabuddhas is limited, devoid of great compassion, and devoid of fearlessness. The exhaustion of defilements of the Tathagata is endowed with all supreme aspects, has completely destroyed all connections of habits, is embraced by great compassion, and is fearless.
