knows perfectly as it is. Therefore, the Tathagata's knowledge, which encompasses all paths and is unobstructed, is established as the power of knowing all paths. As it is said: 'Son of good family, the Tathagata knows the path that goes everywhere, and knows it perfectly as it is.' How does he know it perfectly? He also knows perfectly as it is the realm of sentient beings who are truly determined. He also knows perfectly the realm of sentient beings who are undetermined and wrongly determined. The realm of sentient beings with determination is known perfectly in this way: If there are sentient beings who have the power of cause, whose previous practice is perfect, who understand with a slight hint, and whose faculties are sharp, the Tathagata may or may not teach them the Dharma. Because they have the potential for liberation, the Tathagata knows their previous cause and power and teaches them the Dharma. The realm of undetermined sentient beings is also known in this way: If there are sentient beings who have the power of conditions, who are characterized by being able to be fully ripened, if they encounter harmonious teachings and subsequent guidance, they will be liberated, but if they do not encounter them, they will not be liberated. The Tathagata also speaks truthfully to them about matters that are endowed with causes and conditions. Because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, appear for the sake of those sentient beings who, after hearing such Dharma from the Tathagata, obtain the fruit by practicing properly and truly. The realm of sentient beings with wrong determination is known perfectly in this way: Those sentient beings who have not been completely subdued, who are narrow-minded, foolish, and not vessels, the Tathagata may or may not teach them the Dharma. Because those sentient beings do not have the potential for liberation, the Tathagata knows that they are not vessels and abandons them, remaining neutral towards them. For their sake, the Bodhisattvas put on armor. Furthermore, the Tathagata knows perfectly the three aspects of the path of desire. What are the three? There is a path of desire that arises from the aspect of suffering, and there is a path of desire that arises from the aspect of attachment.

Oh! The path of desire also arises from the cause of previous latent tendencies. The three paths of hatred should also be well understood: the path of hatred also arises from the cause of anger; the path of hatred also arises from the cause of unfulfilled desires; the path of hatred also arises from previous latent tendencies. The three paths of delusion should also be well understood: the path of delusion also arises from the cause of ignorance; the path of delusion also arises from the cause of the view of the perishable aggregate; the path of delusion also arises from the cause of doubt. The Tathagata thoroughly understands all of these. Thus, the cause of all sentient beings' entering and the path arising from the cause of their leaving, all of these are seen without obstruction by the Tathagata's wisdom. This is like what is said, "This is the sixth act of the Tathagata's Tathagata." Now, speaking from the perspective of the power of knowing meditation, liberation, samadhi, absorption, all-encompassing defilement, and the arising of purification: In the boundless world, yogas differ in their distinctions. What are the eight meditations and liberations? What are the stillnesses and samadhis? What are the distinctions of absorption, one and eight? Unobstructed knowledge of these is said to be power. Among them, in the boundless world, the boundless meditations that are thoroughly distinguished by the distinctions of yogis are four. Liberations are eight. Stillness is samadhi, characterized by one-pointedness of mind on virtue. The successive abidings of absorption are nine, namely the four meditations, the four formless absorptions, and the cessation of perception and feeling. The cause of all-encompassing defilement is ignorance and improper attention, and so on. The cause of purification is sound that conforms to others and proper attention to one's own, and so on. Therefore, for the boundless meditations and so on that are thoroughly distinguished by the classifications of yogis, whatever knowledge is unobstructed is meditation.
