This shows the distinctions of the second Bodhisattva ground and so on. Because one does not accept afflictions, because evil does not arise, because the fire of the mind being bound is extinguished and becomes cool, or because it is the cause of happiness, therefore it is what the virtuous should rely on, this is discipline, and it also has the characteristics of seven abandonments. These three dharmas, namely non-attachment, non-hatred, and correct view, are what cause these (disciplines) to arise. Therefore, relying on discipline with the cause of arising, the ten paths of virtuous action are explained. Perfect discipline means that discipline is extremely excellent. Pure qualities mean that qualities are pure, and the words "perfectly pure discipline" are combined together. Because one's own qualities are completely pure, discipline itself is particularly excellent. Because he possesses this discipline, that Bodhisattva is not stained by the defilements of violating discipline even in dreams. Again, how can one become completely pure in qualities through such perfect discipline? Like this, the Bodhisattva who abides on the second Bodhisattva ground, because the actions of body, speech, and mind are pure, is able to accomplish the ten virtuous paths and so on. As it is said in the second Bodhisattva ground of the Bodhisattva-bhumi: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattva who abides on the stainless ground of the Bodhisattva, by nature, abandons killing. He abandons sticks, abandons weapons, abandons holding grudges, possesses shame and enters into compassion. He has benefit, happiness, love, and compassion for all sentient beings. Even by merely thinking, he does not harm sentient beings, let alone thinking of other sentient beings as sentient beings and intentionally thinking of causing great bodily harm. Abandoning taking what is not given is also like this. He is content with his own possessions and has compassion. He is cautious about the possessions of others, so he thinks of things possessed by others as possessed by others, and he does not generate a mind of stealing.

Even if one does not take even a blade of grass or a leaf without giving it, what need is there to mention other means of livelihood? Abandoning sexual misconduct is also like this, because I am content with my own wife and have no desire for other people's wives. If one does not even generate attachment towards women possessed by others, that is, other people's wives, and women protected by lineage, name, and religion, what need is there to mention physical actions or the union of two sexual organs? Abandoning false speech is also like this, speaking truthfully, speaking correctly, and speaking at the right time, doing as one says. Even in dreams, one transforms views, patience, desires, and discriminations, and does not speak false words with a deceptive mind, what need is there to mention speaking intentionally? Abandoning divisive speech is also like this, not causing discord among sentient beings, and engaging in non-harm. Therefore, in order to separate them, one does not hear from here and go there to speak, nor does one hear from there and come here to speak in order to separate them. One does not separate those who are in harmony, nor does one suppress those who are divided, not delighting in disharmony, nor approving of disharmony. One does not speak words that cause disharmony, whether true or false. Abandoning harsh speech is also like this, abandoning those words that are hateful, rude, harmful to others, revealing the faults of others, vulgar, base, spoken to one's face, inclined to abandonment, false, unpleasant to the ear, arising from anger and abuse, displeasing, causing heartache by being unpleasant, causing pain, and making the mind-streams of oneself and others unpleasant. Instead, one speaks those words that are gentle, mild, pleasing, true, pleasant to the ear, lovely, civilized, loved by many, pleasing to many, making one happy, making one content, and harmonizing the mind-streams of oneself and others. Abandoning idle talk is also like this, speaking words that can answer questions well, and speaking at the right time.
