Attachment and views, discipline, asceticism, and the assertion of self are called clinging, that is, abandoning the four clingings. When clinging is exhausted, the birth that is characterized by rebirth will be exhausted. Therefore, in order to establish the order of the cessation of birth in this way, it is said: liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. In this way, if clinging is exhausted, then existence, which is conditioned by it, will not arise. If clinging and existence cease, then how can birth, old age, and death exist? Thus, it is established that liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Then, by what exhaustion do karma and afflictions become exhausted? It is said: Karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, those elaborations arise from elaboration, and they will cease in emptiness. Ignorant ordinary beings do not properly attend to forms and so on, and afflictions such as attachment arise. Attachment, hatred, and ignorance are said to arise from conceptualization. Lovable and unlovable, inverted, arise entirely from dependence. Thus it is explained. The sutra also says: Desire, your root, know that it arises from conceptualization, if you do not arise in conceptualization, therefore you do not arise in me. Thus it is said. Thus, for the time being, karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, and those conceptualizations also arise from various elaborations, habitual from beginningless samsara, knowledge and knowable, expresser and expressed, pot and woolen cloth, chariot and form, feeling and male and female, gain and no gain, happiness and suffering, fame and no fame, praise and blame, and so on. Those worldly elaborations are also entirely through emptiness, that is, by seeing all things as emptiness, they will cease. How do they cease? Because if there is attachment to things, then there will be the elaborations as mentioned before. If there is no attachment to the daughter of a barren woman, then those with attachment will not engage in elaborations with that as their object. If elaborations do not arise, then with that as their object,

If it is not so, conceptualization will not arise. If conceptualization does not arise, then from the attachment to "I" and "mine," the collection of afflictions with the view of the perishable aggregate as its root will not be generated. If the collection of afflictions with the view of the perishable aggregate as its root is not generated, then actions will not be performed. Those who do not perform actions will not experience the cycle of birth, aging, and death. Therefore, emptiness, which is the nature of pacifying all elaborations, by relying on it, one becomes free from elaborations, and by being free from elaborations, conceptualization ceases. When conceptualization ceases, actions and afflictions cease. When actions and afflictions cease, birth ceases. Therefore, emptiness alone is the nature of ceasing all elaborations, and it is called Nirvana. As stated in the "Hundred Treatises": In short, the Dharma is non-harming, as spoken by the Thus-gone Ones. Emptiness is Nirvana. Here, there are only these two. The teacher Sthiramati, not understanding that the emptiness spoken of for the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is realized, says: Noble Hearers, regarding the aggregates of conditioned phenomena, at each moment of arising and ceasing, they certainly see the absence of self and what belongs to self. Because there is no such thing as a self, these arising and ceasing are merely phenomena. Thus, the self is the object of self-grasping; if there is no self, self-grasping will not arise. Because there is no self, there is no internal or external object, so grasping at what belongs to self is unreasonable. Apart from conventional designation, there is no self-grasping or grasping at what belongs to self, so the determination of such a nature will not arise. What need is there to mention the great Bodhisattvas who abide in the realm of non-conceptual wisdom, seeing that conditioned phenomena do not arise? Therefore, it is said: Whatever lacks grasping at self and what belongs to self, that also does not exist. Thus he speaks. How can this teacher be in such a state? He does not follow the teacher's system.
