The reason for refuting is: the agent and the examination of actions, and that it is not without cause, these can be understood in detail from the Madhyamakavatara. In order to refute those, there is no need to strive here either. Those who perform virtuous deeds and turn away from non-virtuous deeds, whose view of self is truly stubborn, like being tied with a very long rope, even if they go to a very distant place, they cannot completely transcend the three realms, and cannot go to the peaceful city of Nirvana. In order to loosen the obvious attachment to the view of the collection of destructibles for those intermediate trainees, and in order to generate the desire for Nirvana, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also taught non-self. Those who, due to the difference of previous habits, have special faith in the profound Dharma, the seeds of subsequent connection are completely matured, they have attained the position close to Nirvana, are free from attachment to self, and are able to measure the truth of the meaning of Shakyamuni Buddha's teachings. For those supreme trainees, especially grasping the difference of faith, the Buddhas also taught that neither self nor non-self exists. Just as clinging to self is not true, so too, clinging to non-self as its antidote is also not true. Therefore, it is taught that there is neither self nor non-self. As it is said in the sutra: Light Guardian, what is called self is one extreme. What is called non-self is the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? That is formless, cannot be indicated, has no support, has no appearance, has no consciousness, has no place. Light Guardian, this is called the Middle Way, which truly and individually understands all dharmas. The noble Ratnavali also says: Thus, self and non-self are not truly and really attainable. The view of self and non-self is therefore prohibited by the Great Hero. What is seen and heard, etc., the Buddha said is neither true nor false. Because it does not agree with one side and turns to the other side, therefore neither of them is meaningful. It is said like this. Because of this, the lower, middle, and upper thoughts of the trainees are different

Therefore, it is through negating both self and non-self that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, expound the Dharma, and therefore, the Madhyamikas are not harmed by scriptures. Therefore, the noble Arya Deva said: 'First, avert non-meritorious deeds; in the middle, avert the self; and finally, avert all views. Whoever knows this is wise.' Similarly, the teacher also said: 'Just as grammarians guide people to read the matrix of letters, so too, the Buddha teaches the Dharma to sentient beings according to their capacity. To some, he teaches the Dharma to turn them away from sin; to some, to accomplish merit; to some, he speaks of reliance on the two truths; to some, he speaks of non-reliance on the two truths. Profound, obscure, and frightening, with emptiness and compassion as its essence, he speaks of the path to enlightenment to some.' Or, this has another meaning: For those who see no connection between action and result in phenomena that perish moment by moment, the Samkhyas and others also cling to the notion of 'self.' Because of this view, they do not see the 'self' that transmigrates in samsara, while the Lokayatas say: 'As far as the senses can reach, that is all there is to a person. The words of those who are eloquent and learned are like the tracks of a jackal (untrustworthy).' Thus, they also expound non-self. Just as those with cataracts see hairs floating in the air, while those without cataracts do not, so too, for those who are obscured by ignorance and cling to self and non-self, the Tathagata, the Buddhas, also say: 'Neither affirm self, nor deny non-self.' Here it is said: If the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have already expounded that there is neither self nor non-self, then they have not expounded these two. Then, what have they expounded? It should be said that they have averted what is to be expressed, because they have averted the scope of mental activity. Unborn and unceasing, the nature of reality is equal to nirvana. If there were something to be expressed here, then it would be expounded. When what is to be expressed is averted, and the realm of words does not exist, then the Buddhas have not expounded anything at all.
