The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Called 'Clear Words' By Chandrakirti The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Called 'Clear Words' By Chandrakirti In Sanskrit: Mūlamādhyamikavṛttiprasannapadānāma. In Tibetan: The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Called 'Clear Words'. Homage to the noble youthful Mañjuśrī! He who dispels the abodes in the two extremes, Has attained birth in the ocean of the wisdom of the perfect Buddha, Just as he understands the profound treasury of the sacred Dharma, He teaches with compassion, following accordingly. With the fire of which view, He still destroys the fuel Of the doctrines of opponents and The darkness of the minds of the world. Whose collection of arrows of speech of non-dual wisdom, In the world of disciples, together with the gods, Having well established the rule in the three realms, Destroys all the hosts of enemies of existence. Having paid homage to Nāgārjuna, I will make A simple commentary on his verses, Well-arranged with elegant speech and Not disturbed by the wind of speculation, extremely clear. That which begins with "Not from self, not from other," etc., is the treatise that will be explained. If one asks what is its connection, subject matter, and purpose, as it is taught in the Entering the Middle Way, the mind of enlightenment is adorned with the first two non-dual wisdoms. Great compassion goes first. The Tathāgata's wisdom becomes the cause of arising, and at the end, the teacher Nāgārjuna, who has realized the way of the perfection of wisdom without turning it upside down, composes the treatise with compassion in order to make others understand, which is for a while the connection of the treatise. The teacher himself shows the meaning of the subject matter of all the treatises that will be explained, together with the purpose, and by showing it without turning it upside down, he speaks of the nature of greatness through his own door, and the holy guru who abides inseparable from its essence, the Tathāgata, is considered to be the cause of writing the treatise. By whatever dependent arising, There is no cessation, no arising, No cutting off, no permanence, No coming, no going.

It is neither different meaning nor same meaning. It is said that "cessation, peace" and so on. Among them, the eight distinctions such as the absence of cessation of dependent arising are distinguished. The subject matter of the treatise is that Nirvana is the complete pacification of all elaborations and has the characteristic of peace, which is shown as the necessity of the treatise. Of the speakers, "I prostrate to that noble one!" This shows the prostration. Thus, this is temporarily the general meaning of the two verses. The meaning of the limbs should also be distinguished. Among them, prati (藏文,梵文天城体,prati, towards) means meeting. Iti (藏文,梵文天城体,iti,go) means going. The sound of pratītya (藏文,梵文天城体,pratītya, dependent) ending with lyap is meeting, which means dependence. The etymology of the word is near transformation, because of complete transformation. Because of the near transformation, The meaning of the word root is completely transformed. The water of the Ganges is sweet, Like the water of the ocean. It is said so. Pāda (藏文,梵文天城体,pāda,foot) above samut means having the meaning of arising, so the sound of samutpāda (藏文,梵文天城体,samutpāda,arising) means arising. Therefore, the arising of things depends on cause and condition, which is the meaning of dependent arising. Others, prati (藏文,梵文天城体,prati, towards) means repetition. Iti (藏文,梵文天城体,iti,go) means going, which is going and destruction. Itya (藏文,梵文天城体,itya, feasible) is the one who can go, so the sound of itya (藏文,梵文天城体,itya, feasible) is specifically explained as having a beneficial ending. The arising of those who go and are destroyed separately is dependent arising, so it is said. According to those, monks, I will explain dependent arising to you. Whoever sees dependent arising sees the Dharma, and so on, because the meaning of repetition is possible in such places, and the word Because there is brevity, special explanation becomes good. For example, depending on the eye and form, the consciousness of the eye arises, and so on. In this place, depending on the eye and form, the difference of meaning is directly acknowledged, and it is considered that even one consciousness caused by one eye faculty arises, so the sound of "depending on" itself has the meaning of repetition.
