Saying that greed, etc., are to be exhausted, other defilements cannot be eliminated. Therefore, these sayings are not universal Dharma, and these sayings are not essential. Whatever is said to eliminate ignorance eliminates all afflictions. The Buddhas said that all afflictions truly depend on ignorance. Because it is seen that ignorance arising from dependence can be eliminated, that is reality. The Tathagatas declared that this reality is the Middle Way. Wanting to say that the nature of this Buddha's Dharma is real, it is said to be emptiness. It is also declared that this is the mind of the Buddhas, and this is great reason. Because this is the source of all merits, and is taught by the Buddhas. Therefore, for this reason, the son of the Buddha, Manjushri Nagarjuna, who has a compassionate heart, truly knows the Buddha's scriptures, and respectfully expounds the Madhyamaka treatises as the main content. In order to make those who do not understand the profound Buddha-dharma understand, and in order to correct those who want to explain reality outside of the Buddha's teachings, and those who explain the Buddhist scriptures in other ways with bad wisdom, in order to dispel these errors, he wrote this treatise that breaks through the two extremes. Nagarjuna, Rahula, from the good teacher, and even from the gods, followed his teachings and clarified this method for a long time. His disciples, through the analysis of this treatise, with definite wisdom, defeated all heretics and propagated the supreme Buddha's teachings for a long time. Someone came to seek the head, and he compassionately cut off the head and gave it away. It is said that Bodhisattva Nagarjuna was born in the Pure Land of Bliss. The treatises he wrote and the writings of his disciples have declined for a long time. Because the sun has set, today clear treatises cannot be found anywhere. Therefore, most people in the world are only proficient in the meaning mixed with conceptual thoughts, far away from the holy path, indulging in the intoxication of speculation, and far away from the truth of all the scriptures spoken by the omniscient Buddha.

When times of conflict arise, whoever can instantly dispel duality and realize emptiness is fortunate indeed. Bound by the fetters of things, doctrines entwined like ropes, severed by the fear of the sword, the wise one who leaps into the enclosure of things, that one is great. Relying on that, I have no such qualities; now, I am an unwise person. For that very reason, I have composed this commentary that destroys other treatises. I have seen the Compendium of Sutras, the Precious Garland, the Hymn of True Reality, and the words of the teachings clearly extracted from the treatises of the noble ones through long and diligent effort, as well as the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, the Extensive Refutation, and the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, and also the Arrangement of the Refutation of Disputes. I have also seen the Hundred Stanzas and so forth, as well as many profound sutras, and the commentary composed by Buddhapālita, and whatever good explanations were given by Bhāviveka. Whatever has come from the lineage of transmission from one to another, and whatever I have found through my own analysis, I have gathered these together and presented them as true teachings in order to please those endowed with great intelligence. Endowed with the wheel of analysis, destroying wrong views, for those with clear minds, the rays of words here clearly illuminate the true meaning without any confusion. This clear commentary, like the famed moon of Candrakīrti, has now risen, dispelling the thick darkness of duality from the minds of all beings. Relying on scripture and reasoning, this well-organized, unconfused, and word-filled commentary, in order to establish certainty for the virtuous and faithful, I have respectfully composed it. May all the merit that I have accumulated, vast as emptiness, lead all beings, abandoning the assemblies of gods, to the state of cutting off all elaborations. I prostrate to the teacher Gautama and his doctrine, and all the complete Buddhas who have entered into it, and the assemblies of the sons of the Conquerors, and the Dharma they have spoken. In order to see the boundless words of the Buddha, the Middle Way is the eye of beings; I prostrate to Nāgārjuna, who opened this door through his compassion. The commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, called "Clear Words," [Prasannapadā] is by the teacher Candrakīrti, who is supreme in the vehicle.

Please pay attention! Possessing unseizable wisdom and compassion. Like milking milk from a painted cow, you have dispelled the attachment to truth, therefore this commentary is completely finished. That which is churned from the ocean of scriptures is indeed a vessel of nectar. That which is called "Wisdom" is the jewel lamp of the illuminating Commentary on the Clear Words. By whatever merit accumulated from the translation, may Nima Drak (ཉི་མ་གྲགས།) be renowned. May I abandon heavy views and wander in the uncontrived sky! In the center of the incomparable city of Kashmir, At the foot of the temple where jewels are hidden, Before the great Indian Abbot Logician, Mahāsumati, The Tibetan translator Patsawa Nyima Drak translated according to the Kashmir model. Later, in the Lhasa Ramoche Temple, the Kashmiri Abbot Kanakavarma and the Tibetan translator Nyima Drak himself, compared it with the eastern model under the sun (referring to India), made perfect revisions and finalized it. All sources are recorded as they are said. If there are differences between Sanskrit and Tibetan, Please translate according to the literal meaning of the text, Judge and research impartially.
