Again, why is it said to be inexpressible? Because the sphere of activity of the mind has ceased. Thus it is said, the sphere of activity of the mind is the sphere of activity of the mind. The sphere of activity is the object, which is a synonym for "object of focus." If there were some sphere of activity of the mind, then some reasons could be fabricated there, and words could be applied. When the sphere of activity of the mind itself is not established, then where would reasons be fabricated, and how would words be applied? Again, why is there no sphere of activity of the mind? Because it is taught: Unborn and unceasing, the nature of reality is equal to nirvana. Thus it is said, because the unborn and unceasing nature of reality, that is, the essence of dharma and the intrinsic nature of dharma, is established as being equal to nirvana, therefore the mind does not enter into it. If the mind does not enter, how could reasons be fabricated? Since it does not exist, how could words be applied? Therefore, the Buddhas have not taught anything at all, and abide in this. For that very reason: All objects of focus are completely pacified, and elaboration is also pacified. The Buddhas, in whatever place, have not taught any dharma to anyone. It will be explained in this way. Is this not so? Or, this previous point of view is another, namely, that elaboration is ceased by emptiness. If someone says this, then how is elaboration ceased by emptiness? The answer is: Because, what is said is: What is to be said is reversed, because the sphere of activity of the mind has ceased. And so on, it should be explained as before. Another way of saying it is, if someone says: Previously, because inner and outer things were not focused upon, therefore the thoughts of grasping at inner and outer as "I" and "mine" have ceased, that is what is meant here by "suchness." Then, what is it like? Is it possible to speak of it or know it? It is like this: What is to be said is reversed, because the sphere of activity of the mind has ceased. "Suchness," that is the remainder of the words. Again, why is it that suchness is what is to be said is reversed, and the sphere of activity of the mind is ceased? Because, unborn and unceasing, the nature of reality is equal to nirvana. Thus it is said, the explanation is the same as before.

It should be so. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: Peaceful Wisdom, on the night when the Tathagata attained the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and on the night when he passed into complete nirvana without remainder, in between these two, the Tathagata did not utter even a single word. It is said in the sutra that he will not speak. Like a musical instrument made by a wheel, sound arises when the wind blows, although there is no player, yet the sound will arise. Similarly, having been well trained beforehand, and propelled by the intention of sentient beings, the Buddha's speech will also arise, but there is no conceptualization in this. Like the echo of a valley, it is not inside, nor outside, similarly, the language of the king of men exists inside and outside. Thus and so forth appear. Here, some say that the Madhyamikas and nihilists are no different, because they say that virtuous and non-virtuous actions, as well as the agent, result, and all the worlds, are empty of inherent existence. The nihilists also say that these do not exist, therefore, the Madhyamikas and nihilists are no different, thus they refute. It is not so, the Madhyamikas are those who speak of dependent origination, because it is dependent origination, they say that this world and the other world, etc., are all without inherent existence. The nihilists do not think that other worlds, etc., do not exist through emptiness of inherent existence because it is dependent origination, what is it then? Rather, they grasp the appearance of things in this world as inherently existing, and not seeing that they come from other worlds to this world, and go from this world to other worlds, they slander other things similar to the things grasped in this world. If that is the case, even so, they grasp the state of things being without inherent existence as non-existence, so temporarily speaking, there is similarity through this view, is it? It is not so, because the Madhyamikas acknowledge existence in conventional truth.
