it also becomes such a fault. Similarly, the aggregates themselves are not the self, they arise and perish. How can the aggregates become the one who takes the aggregates? This is how it is explained. Furthermore, this aspect is: if the aggregates are the self, then because of that, because of the many, those selves also become many. The self becomes a substance and observes there, because of entering into substance, it will not be reversed. At the time of extinction, the self will definitely be cut off. Before extinction, those moments, there is no creator of arising and ceasing, therefore it is the nature of being fruitless. Others accumulate karma, and others will enjoy it. Like this and so on, after extensively analyzing from the Introduction to the Middle Way, one should understand, here we will not make extensive elaboration. Thus, for the time being, the aggregates are not the self, and it is also not permissible to be different from the aggregates. If, other than those aggregates, it becomes without the nature of aggregates. Just as a horse other than a cow will not become the nature of a cow. Similarly, when I imagine myself as different from the aggregates, I will become without the nature of aggregates. Those aggregates, because they are conditioned phenomena, are of the nature of arising, abiding, and ceasing. That self has not become the nature of the aggregates, therefore it will not possess arising, abiding, and ceasing. Whatever is such a thing, because it is not existent, or because it is not a conditioned phenomenon, like a flower in the sky or extinction, it will not be found to be called self, and as the object of self-grasping, that itself is also not reasonable. Therefore, it is not reasonable for the self to be different from the aggregates. In one way, this is another meaning. If the self is different from the aggregates, then it will become of the nature of not being aggregates, the five aggregates are of the nature of being able to be colored, experienced, taken as signs, manifestly fabricated, and individually distinguishing objects, I, like distinguishing from form, when thinking of being different from those aggregates, it will be established that the nature is different, and when the nature is established as different, it will be taken like taking mind from form, and it is also not grasping. Therefore, that which is different from the aggregates also does not exist. If those non-Buddhists

Understanding that the lord of the earth is distinct from the aggregates, and not saying that its characteristics are also distinct, is it not? Therefore, this method does not harm them. Just as the heretics say that the characteristics of the self are distinct: The self that is the enjoyer, permanent, real, and not the agent, without qualities or actions, is examined by the heretics. Relying on those slight differences, the tenets of the heretics become different. As it is said in the Entering the Middle Way. If it is said so, then it should be said: It is true that the heretics say that the self is distinct from the aggregates and speak of its characteristics, but they do not speak of its characteristics by aiming at the self's own nature. What is it then? Because they are afraid of not understanding the meaning of relying on and examining as it is, they do not understand the self as merely a name, and they also fall away from the conventional truth. They are deceived by mere appearances, like false inferences, through the door of mere wrong conceptions, and thus they fully conceive of the self, and they also speak of its characteristics. When it is said that the examination of actions and agents, etc., and the self and the near-taking are established in mutual dependence, then in the conventional sense also, it is the negation of those things. Just as by relying on a mirror, the image of one's own nature appears, but in reality, there is not even a little of it. Similarly, by relying on the aggregates, the grasping at self becomes the object. Like the image of one's own face, in reality there is none of it. Just as without relying on a mirror, the image of one's own nature does not appear, so too, without relying on the aggregates, the arising of grasping at self is similar. Thus it is said. Therefore, no effort is made to show it. Those who are connected with the perverted minds of ignorance, which are established by reliance, are the basis for the manifest clinging to self. These five aggregates, which appear as the near-taking of something, are they something that has the characteristics of the aggregates? Or is it something that does not have the characteristics of the aggregates? Those who desire liberation analyze it in this way. Because those who desire liberation do not find it when they analyze it in all ways, therefore, for them: If the self itself does not exist, how can the existence of the self exist? Because the self is not found, the aggregates, which are the cause for imputing the self
