Therefore, it is proclaimed that with its words, it also includes the promise of complete purity and being in the company of those who possess discipline. Therefore, not only is it reasonable to view non-self-existence through the example of illusion, but also to show that one should clearly understand through these examples that things are without self-existence, it is said: Afflictions, actions, and bodies, as well as agents and results, are like a city of Gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. Among these, afflictions refer to desire and so on, because they afflict the minds of sentient beings. Actions refer to virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering actions. Bodies refer to the physical forms. Agents refer to selves. Results refer to the fully ripened, dominant, and similar results. These meanings of afflictions and so on should be understood as being without self-existence, like the appearance of a city of Gandharvas and so on. Therefore, since the Madhyamikas do not accept the self-existence of things, they are free from falling into the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, and this should be understood. For a detailed analysis of the debates and remaining bad arguments and answers in the examination of the relationship between actions and results, it must be determined from the Introduction to the Middle Way. Here, an example will be given of the story of two emanation monks subduing five hundred monks who hold onto signs, as described in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra, complete and without omission. From the Clear Words commentary composed by the venerable teacher Chandrakirti, the commentary on the seventeenth chapter, Examination of Actions and Results. Here it is said: If afflictions, actions, bodies, agents, and results, all of these are not the ultimate reality, but like a city of Gandharvas and so on, while not being the ultimate reality, they appear to children as the aspect of the ultimate reality, then what is the ultimate reality here? And how does one enter into the ultimate reality? It should be said: Since internal and external phenomena are not found, therefore, all clinging to self and what belongs to self, both internal and external, is exhausted, and this is the ultimate reality here. Entering into the ultimate reality is the arising of afflictions.

All these arise from the view of the perishable aggregate, seen by wisdom; the yogi, realizing that I am the object of this, thus eliminates the self. And so on, the details can be found in the "Entering the Middle Way." Here, only the aspect of existence will be discussed. Here, the yogi who wishes to enter Suchness and wishes to thoroughly abandon all afflictions and faults, will thus properly contemplate: What is the root of this cycle of existence? When thus properly contemplating, it will be seen that the cycle of existence has the view of the perishable aggregate as its root, and it will be seen that I am the object of that view of the perishable aggregate. Since there is no I as the object, the view of the perishable aggregate is eliminated, and by eliminating it, it will be seen that all afflictions and faults will cease. Therefore, one must first properly contemplate what this "I," which is called the object of clinging to self, actually is. If the object of clinging to self is analyzed, will it be the nature of the aggregates? Or will it be something different from the aggregates? In this regard, the dependent and the relied upon, and the aspects related to them, are all included in the category of being either the same or different. And, in order to briefly describe, if one wants to start refuting the self by negating these two aspects of being the same and different, then, if the aggregates are the self, it will become subject to arising and ceasing. If it is different from the aggregates, it will become without the nature of the aggregates. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the examination of the Tathagata and the examination of fire and firewood, five aspects are described in detail, why are there only two aspects here? It is to be said, because in those places five aspects have already been explained. Because it has already been explained elsewhere, it is not explained here, but two aspects are briefly described, namely, if one thinks that the aggregates are the self, then therefore it will become subject to arising and ceasing, that is, I will become subject to arising and ceasing, because the aggregates depend on arising and ceasing. I also do not want to think that way, because that would lead to many faults. For example: it does not arise from not having arisen, this would become a fault. I will become created, and arising without a cause.
