Or from both or from no cause, and from some arising from some, therefore it contradicts the foregoing. Or, everything arises from everything. Therefore, for it, there is neither establishment nor refutation. Therefore, that is meaningless, the refuter says. This is not meaningless either, because it has already been shown only in the foregoing, and it refutes the meaning promised by others, and it is also a refutation itself, therefore this is reasonable. Therefore, there is no need to strive again. Things are not born from both either, because having spoken of both sides, it will fall into a dilemma, and each one does not have the power to produce. If each one could produce, then it would become produced by two sufferings. It will be explained like this. It is not born from no cause either, because if there is no cause, then the result and the cause will not be reasonable. Because it will fall into the fault of being explained by things such as "if there is no cause, then the result and the cause will not be reasonable", and it will fall into faults such as "if it is empty of cause, then these beings are not to be taken, just like the fragrance and color of a lotus in the sky". Scholar Buddhagupta says that things are not born from no cause either, because it will fall into the constant arising of everything from everything. Regarding this, Scholar Subhagupta says that this is also a statement that will fall into it. If you want to clearly show what is to be established and what establishes it, in reverse, as the meaning of the words, then at that time you should say this: things arise from causes, sometimes some arise from some, and the creation is combined with the result. If it is shown like this, then this explanation is unreasonable, because it will fall into the faults mentioned earlier. The refuter says so. Others say that this is unreasonable because it has already been answered before. Some say that this is to approach Ishvara and others, which is also unreasonable, because Ishvara and others, as promised, are self, other, and both.

It is for the sake of gathering in that direction. Therefore, the statement "there is no birth" has been established. Because there is no birth, the dependent arising is distinguished by no-birth and so on, and is established. Here it is said that if the dependent arising is distinguished by no-birth and so on, then what about the Blessed One's saying, "Due to ignorance, actions arise, and when ignorance ceases, actions cease," and similarly, "Alas, actions are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease, and their pacification is bliss," and similarly, "Whether the Tathāgatas appear or not, the nature of dharmas is only abiding," and "The dharma that makes beings abide is one, namely the four fasts. The dharmas that protect the world are two, namely knowing shame and having embarrassment," and similarly, "The world comes here from the other world, and the world goes from this world to the other world," how can it not be contradictory that the dependent arising is distinguished by cessation and so on? Because it is heard that dependent arising, cessation, and so on exist in that way, the teacher composed this treatise on the Middle Way in order to show the distinction between direct and definitive meanings and the sutras of definitive meaning. Among them, the teaching of birth and so on in dependent arising is not in relation to the nature of the object of uncontaminated wisdom of those who are free from the darkness of ignorance. What is it then? It is in relation to the object of consciousness of those whose eye of wisdom has been impaired by the darkness of ignorance. In relation to those who see suchness, the Blessed One said, "Monks, this is the supreme truth, namely the undeceiving nature of nirvana. All actions are false, they are of a deceiving nature." Similarly, this is suchness.

There is no undeceiving nature, these are of the nature of deceiving. These are false, illusory, and entice children, so it is said. Likewise, form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble on water, perception is like a mirage, formation is like a plantain tree, consciousness is like an illusion. Thus, the kinsman of the sun (Shakyamuni Buddha) declared. Similarly, if a monk is diligent, endowed with mindfulness and awareness, and contemplates the Dharma day and night, then all formations will be close to the state of peace, tranquility. He will realize that all phenomena are without self. Thus and so forth it is said. Because one does not understand the intention of what is shown in this way, some may doubt: What is the teaching here that is solely of that meaning? What is the teaching here that has an intention? And some, due to their dullness, understand the teachings of provisional meaning as definitive meaning. In order to dispel the doubts and wrong views of these two, the teacher composed this treatise. Among them, "not born from self" and so forth are the statements of reasoning. What Dharma did the Bhagavan say is deceptive, that is false. All formations are deceptive Dharmas, therefore they are false. When asked if there is a prior limit, the Great Hero (Shakyamuni Buddha) said no. Samsara is without beginning or end, therefore there is no before or after. The Bhagavan, with his wisdom, knew existence and non-existence, and in the teachings of Katyayana, he refuted both existence and non-existence. Thus and so forth are the statements of scripture. In the Sutra taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence, it says: What is a Sutra of definitive meaning? What is a Sutra of provisional meaning? Those Sutras that are taught for the sake of entering the path are called provisional meaning. Those Sutras that are taught for the sake of entering the result are called definitive meaning. Those Sutras that teach about self, sentient beings, life, goers, nourishers, persons, individuals, those born of power, doers, feelers, and various sounds, and those without a lord
