So! Because the inverted and the non-inverted are distinct in this way, therefore, since the inverted does not exist in the state of non-inversion, how can there be a conventional eye that becomes the subject? Therefore, since the fault of the unestablished subject and the fault of the unestablished reason are unavoidable, this is not an answer. There is no similarity in the example either. Because there, the generality of sound and the generality of impermanence, both of which do not want to express the difference, exist. Now, similarly, those who say that the generality of the eye is emptiness and non-emptiness have not admitted it even conventionally, and it is not ultimately true either, so there is no similarity in the example either. The way of stating the fault of the unestablished subject is that the fault of unestablishedness should also be applied to the reason "because it exists." Such is the case because this debater himself has admitted the meaning of what has been said. How so? The causes, etc., that produce the internal sense bases exist, because the Thus-Gone One has said so. What the Thus-Gone One has said is true, just as "Nirvana is peace." To this proof established by others, is the meaning of the reason that you consider here because the Thus-Gone One said so conventionally, or because he said so ultimately? If it is said conventionally, then the meaning of the reason is not established for oneself. But if it is ultimately, then when the dharma exists, and non-existence and existence-non-existence are not established, then the cause of the existence and non-existence of the fruit, and the nature of both, is eliminated, how can it be called a proving cause? If that is so, it is unreasonable. That is not a proving cause, that is the meaning. Therefore, because what is to be proven and what proves are not established ultimately, the meaning of the unestablished reason itself and the meaning of contradiction itself, he has stated this fault. Because in that way

Therefore, he admits that the reason is not established in this way. For all inferences that posit the dharma of things as a reason, since the reason, etc., are not established in themselves, all that is to be proven will be completely destroyed. For example, ultimately, the internal sense bases do not arise from other causes, because they are "other," like a pot. Or, ultimately, the internal sense bases, such as the eye, which others want to express as accomplishing things, are definitely not causes, because they are "other," like the nasal passages, etc. Here, "otherness," etc., is not established in itself. As he says, the internal sense bases are merely born, because they produce special names corresponding to their objects. Therefore, he wants to say that this reason stated by others is not established. He says, "If, ultimately, a yogi, with the eye of wisdom in equipoise, sees the arising and passing away of things as they truly are, then they can produce special names corresponding to their objects." This reason itself is not established. He also says, "Cessation is also ceased only because arising is prevented." Similarly, for one's own proofs, one should apply it thus: Ultimately, there is no going where one has not gone, because it is a path, like a path that has been gone. The reason itself should be combined with the meaning of the path being established in itself. Ultimately, the dependent eye does not see form, because it is the eye faculty, like something similar to it. Similarly, the eye does not see form, because it is born from the four great elements, like form. Earth is not of the nature of hardness, because it is an element, like wind. In these examples, too, one should combine the meaning of the reason, etc., being established in itself. According to the opponent's view, is it not the case that the reason "because it exists" means that the internal sense bases, because they exist, are not from the self, just as knowledge exists?
