Therefore, establishing refutation is merely the fruit of obstructing the opponent's commitment, so from the perspective of refutation, there is no transformation into the meaning of reversal. Thus, the teacher said: "Before the characteristic of space, there is not even a little space. If it existed before the characteristic, it would follow that it is without characteristic." And similarly: "Except for the cause of form, form is without the cause of form. It would follow that any entity, without a cause, does not exist anywhere." And similarly: "Nirvana is not a real entity; it would follow that it has the characteristic of aging and death. There is no aging and death; a real entity does not exist." And so on, mostly eliminating the views of others solely through the method of establishing refutation. Why is it that the words of the wise teacher are words of meaning, and because they are of great meaning, if one understands them to be the cause of many arguments, then why not understand the words of the teacher Buddhapālita in the same way? If it is said that elaborately stating the words of argument is the custom of the commentators, that is not the case either, because when composing the commentary on the *Vigrahavyāvartanī*, the teacher did not speak the words of argument either. Furthermore, this logician, wanting to merely show that he is extremely skilled in treatises on logic, while professing the view of the Madhyamaka school, speaks the words of autonomous argument, which is understood to be a place of many extremely great faults. How so? For example, for the time being, what turns into a word of argument here is: "In the ultimate truth, the inner sense bases are definitely not produced from self, because they exist, just like the existence of knowledge." Here, why is the distinction "in the ultimate truth" specifically established? If it is said that it is because one should not refute the acceptance of production in the conventional truth of the world, and if one refutes it, it would follow that one is harmed by acceptance, this is not reasonable, because production from self is not accepted even in the conventional. As it is said in the sutra, the sprout that arises from the cause of the seed,

Furthermore, regarding arising, it is not made by myself, not made by others, not made by both, not made by Īśvara, not transformed by time, not arising from atoms, not arising from nature, not arising from essence, not born from no cause, so it is said. Similarly: If there is a seed, it is like a sprout, the seed is not the sprout itself, it is not different from it, nor is it the same, thus it is neither permanent nor annihilated, it is the nature of phenomena. So it is said. Also in this very text it is explained: That which arises dependent on what, that is temporarily not that itself, it is also not different from it, therefore it is neither annihilated nor permanent. If it is said that the distinction is made in reliance on the tenets of others, that is also unreasonable, because the establishment of those is not even accepted in conventional truth. It is understood that as long as one refutes the heretics who have fallen from seeing the two truths without inversion through both aspects, that is itself a virtue. Thus, it is also unreasonable to state distinctions in reliance on the tenets of others. From what, relying on that, does the distinction become connected with the result? Even from the world, it is not understood to arise from self, because worldly people have cut off the modes of behavior such as arising from self and others, and only understand that the result arises from the cause. The teacher also made such an establishment, therefore, in all respects, it is certain that the distinction is meaningless. Furthermore, if one intends to refute arising in conventional truth and establishes this distinction, then at that time, there will be the fault of the subject not being established for oneself, or the fault of the reason not being established, because one has not accepted the sense bases such as the eye in ultimate truth. If it is said that there is no fault because there are eyes and so on in conventional truth, then what is the distinction of "in ultimate truth"? If it is said that the term "ultimate truth" is mentioned as a distinction for refuting the arising of conventional eyes and so on in ultimate truth, then one should say that conventional eyes and so on do not arise in ultimate truth, and if one were to say that,

Now, I won't say anything more. If I were to speak, it would be because the opponents have already accepted that things like the eye are inherently existent as substances, and because they do not accept that they can be analyzed. Therefore, it would become a fault of the basis not being established for others, so this is unreasonable. If, like saying "sound is impermanent," one takes the general nature of both the dharma and the possessor of the dharma, but not the particular. If one takes the particular, then the terms inference and what is to be inferred will disappear. Like this, if one takes the sound that is made of the four great elements, then that is not established for the opponent. However, if one takes the quality of space, then that is not established for oneself, the enlightened one. Similarly, when a Vaibhashika vows that sound is impermanent, if one takes the sound that is produced, then that is not established for others. However, if it is taken as manifestly clear, then that is not established for oneself. Similarly, accordingly, if destruction is with cause, then that is not established for oneself, the enlightened one. However, if it is without cause, then that is not established for the opponent. Therefore, just as here one takes only the general nature of the dharma and the possessor of the dharma, so too here one should take only the possessor of the dharma, abandoning the particular. But that is not so. Like this, when here the cessation of birth is intended as the dharma to be established, then at that time, only with the inverted possessor of the dharma as its basis, the attainment of my object will become impaired, which is what you yourself have admitted. Inverted and non-inverted are different. Therefore, when someone with cataracts, like seeing hair, apprehends what is not existent as existent in an inverted way, then how could even a small part of the meaning that has become existent be perceived? When someone without cataracts, like not seeing hair, does not impute what is not true in a non-inverted way, then how could even a small part of the meaning that has become conventionally non-existent be perceived at that time? Therefore, the teacher also said: "If by direct perception, etc., some meaning is perceived, if one wants to establish it as irrefutable, since it does not exist, I have no fault."
