It is like those translators who strive to make things like rubies into real objects. Whatever is of its own nature is uncreated. For example, the heat of fire, or the essence of rubies and other gems. Because they are not produced by combining with other things, they are called their own nature. Therefore, there is a worldly saying that "own nature is uncreated." Now we say that whatever is heat is also created, so it should not be clung to as own nature. Here, the meeting of gems, tinder, and sunlight, and the fire produced from rubbing wood, are all seen as dependent on causes and conditions. Because there is no heat other than fire, heat is also produced by causes and conditions. Therefore, it is created. Because it is created, it is clearly not own nature, like the temperature of water. If someone asks: Isn't it common knowledge that the own nature of fire is heat, even among cowherds and women? Would we say that we do not know? We say that this should not be considered own nature, because it lacks the characteristics of own nature. Because of following the inverted ignorance, worldly people mistake the state of things without own nature as having own nature. Just as those with eye diseases, due to the cause of the eye disease, mistake hairs and other things that are originally without own nature as having own nature, children, because their vision is impaired by the eye disease of ignorance, mistake the state of things without own nature as having own nature, and apart from other things, due to its uniqueness, they cling to the idea that the own nature of fire is heat, just as they say that own nature is its own characteristic. For the sake of those things that are familiar to those people, the Blessed One also distinguished the conventional own nature of those things in the Dharma. People

It is said that the commonalities such as permanence are the general characteristics. When those who are free from the darkness of ignorance and possess the eyes of immaculate wisdom look, then, just as those who are free from darkness do not see the hairs seen by those with blurred vision, those who have not seen the self-nature conjectured by the minds of noble beings and ordinary people clearly declare that this is not the self-nature of things. As it is said in the Sutra of the Descent into Lanka: Just as those with blurred vision, wrongly grasp hairs, Likewise, this conception of things, Is wrongly conceived by children. If there is no self-nature, and no consciousness, If there is no alaya, and no reality, Evil children, thinkers, Think of these as like corpses. Similarly, Mahamati, considering that self-nature is unborn, said that all the dharmas I have spoken of are unborn. It is like this that it is widely proclaimed. Here it is said, if someone says that the heat of fire, etc., arises from causes and conditions, and is made, therefore it is not self-nature. Then, now it must be explained what their self-nature is, and what that self-nature is. It should be said: Self-nature is unmade, and does not depend on others. This means that one's own thing is self-nature, that is, the essence of something is the self-nature of that thing. What is the essence of something? It is what something is not made of. Whatever is made is not its essence, like the temperature of water. Whatever does not depend on something is also its essence, like one's own servants and one's own property. Whatever depends on others is not its essence, like a temporary image without autonomy. Because one does not want what is made and depends on oneself to be self-nature, it is unreasonable to say that heat is the self-nature of fire, because it depends on cause and condition, and because it arises from what has never arisen, so it is made. Because of this reason, this to that

Therefore, in the three times, the unadulterated, intrinsic nature that is not mistaken for fire; that which does not arise later from not having arisen before; that which is not dependent on causes and conditions like the heat of water, or this shore and the other shore, or long and short, that is said to be self-nature. If you ask, "Does the self-nature of fire, having become like that, exist?" The answer is, "It neither exists by its own nature, nor does it not exist." Although it is like that, in order to dispel the fear of the listeners, it is said conventionally that it exists by imputation. As the Bhagavan said: In the dharma without letters, who is the listener and who is the speaker? Because of imputation, there are no letters; that is both the listener and the speaker. It is like that. In this very (sutra), it will also be explained: One should not say empty, one should not say not empty, one should not say two or not two, one should speak for the sake of designation. If it is said that it exists by imputation, then what is it like? The answer is: its own nature is the very thing called the dharmata of all dharmas. Then, what is this dharmata of all dharmas? It is the essence of all dharmas. What is essence? It is self-nature. What is self-nature? It is emptiness. What is emptiness? It is absence of self-nature. What is absence of self-nature? It is suchness. What is suchness? The nature of suchness is immutability, and constant abiding, and the unborn nature of all kinds, because it is not artificial, and because it does not depend on others, it is said to be the self-nature of fire and so on. It will be taught thus: The appearance of things, perceived by the power of the darkness of ignorance, is in a way that is not seen. By what does oneself excel, becoming the object of those who are free from the darkness of ignorance, the essence is established as the self-nature of those. Self-nature is unconditioned and does not depend on others. This, it is to be known, is established as its characteristic by the teachers.
