When discussing 'otherness,' it is said that in reality, if 'otherness' is examined, it does not exist. If 'otherness' does not exist, but in conventional worldly terms, it is said that a pot and a cloth are different, then why not say that a seed and a sprout are also different? It can be said that worldly people do not perceive a seed and a sprout as being as different as a pot and a cloth. Because if they were like a pot and a cloth, it would lead to there being no producer and no produced, and it would lead to simultaneous existence. Furthermore, why do worldly people say, 'I planted this tree,' planting only a seed, yet showing the fruit of the seed—the tree? Therefore, for things that have become cause and effect, even in the world, 'otherness' does not exist, and this is how it is established. Here it is said that if the awareness of 'other' arises dependent on other things, then the fault of 'therefore it will not become other' will occur. But we do not say that. So, what is it? Here, 'otherness' is both a generality and a particularity. The thing it encompasses, even if it does not depend on other things, can be called 'other.' Therefore, for our side, there is no opportunity to raise a fault. It can be said that if 'otherness' existed, then that would be the case, but it does not exist. Here, when thinking about 'otherness,' to show that it is unreasonable to think of it as either 'other' or 'non-other,' it is said: 'Otherness on the other, does not exist. Otherness on the non-other, also does not exist.' That is how it is said. If it is thought that 'otherness exists on the other,' then what is the use of examining 'otherness'? If it is thought that recognizing 'otherness' is to establish 'saying otherness in the other,' then even without 'otherness,' it can be established 'saying otherness in the other,' because 'otherness' of the other is examined in order to recognize 'saying otherness in the other.' Therefore, for the time being, 'otherness' cannot exist on the other. Now, 'otherness' also does not exist on the non-other, because the non-other refers to 'one.' And 'one' has 'oneness,' which contradicts 'otherness,' therefore it is contradictory.

Sa. There is no otherness when there is no other. If it is the case that something is neither other nor otherness, and there is no object apart from these, then that which is not apart from these is also non-existent, which is non-existence itself. Since otherness does not exist, it is established that the cause of conjunction with otherness, the cause of the application of sound, and other objects do not exist either. Here it is said: Even if otherness does not exist, the other exists for a while. Without otherness, the other should not exist, therefore, otherness will also exist. It should be said: If otherness does not exist, then neither the other nor the same exists. When it has already been shown that otherness does not exist, how can the other or the same exist without otherness? The term 'the same' is synonymous with 'non-otherness'. Therefore, neither the other nor the same exists. Here it is said: Seeing and so forth are existent, because there is contact. Here, even if it has been shown that seeing and so forth do not have otherness, nevertheless, contact is the gathering and assembly of three, therefore contact also exists, so because there is contact, seeing and so forth are existent. It should be said: If those contacts themselves exist, then it would be so, but they do not exist. Because it is shown how they do not exist, (the text says:) "It does not touch it, nor does another touch another." Here, if there is contact with seeing and so forth, then it should be examined whether they are oneness or otherness. Among these, if it is oneness, then there is no contact, just as one would not say that milk alone, which does not depend on water, is in contact with water. If they are distinct, then there is also no contact, just as one would not say that milk existing separately from water is in contact with water. Thus, if seeing and so forth are oneness, it is unreasonable to assume contact, because then the single eye would also be considered to have contact. However, if it is distinctness, then it is also unreasonable, because then the single eye, separated from form and so forth, would also be considered to have contact.
