No. Therefore, what you say, that conditioned phenomena such as consciousness exist because they have their cause—karma and the agent—is unreasonable. Here someone says: 'Do you definitely hold the view that things do not exist?' No, I don't. For you who assert that things have inherent existence, it is possible to slander everything by denying things. But we believe that since things arise dependently, the very nature of all things is not apparent. So, what would be slandered? As it is said in the Ratnavali: 'Someone thinks that a mirage is water and goes there. If he thinks that there is no water there, that is foolish. Similarly, to think that the mirage-like world exists or does not exist is ignorant, and with ignorance, there is no liberation.' Without knowing, first investigate, and then determine the meaning. When things are not apparent, how can they become non-existent?' Therefore, how can the views you have stated be established for those things that have no inherent existence? Therefore, what you say, that conventional things, like the water of a mirage, are established only by accepting the worldly perversion and by accepting that these conditions are 'just this,' and not by other means. Someone says: 'The agent depends on the action, and the action also arises depending on the agent. Other than that, no other cause of establishment is seen.' Here, the agent that does not depend on the action is not the agent itself, and the agent's agenthood depends on the action. Nothing that is not being done by the agent will become the action itself, so the very act of doing is called the action, so the action also arises depending on the agent. Thus, other than the establishment of action and agent depending on each other, no other cause of establishment is seen. To explain that just as action and agent are established depending on each other, so are other things, it is said: 'Similarly, the proximate cause should be understood, in order to eliminate action and agent.'

The term "suchness" immediately indicates the difference between action and agent. Because it is "closely taken," it is a "close taker." Thus, this shows the act of "close taking," and it also causes its own accomplisher, agent, and close taker to hold from the things that should be closely taken. Moreover, the close taker and the close taker, like action and agent, are established in dependence on each other, not by their own nature. Furthermore, why is it not established by its own nature? It is for the sake of eliminating action and agent. It is said, "Elimination is prevention." The tone of "reason" is to hold the reason. Therefore, the meaning is that we should know that only with those reasons by which we have explained the elimination of action and agent, the close taker and the close taker are also prevented, which is reasonable. Because action and agent are prevented, it is not only necessary to determine that these two are established in dependence on each other, but also, the sentence "By agents and actions, other things should be known, by the wise" is the remaining sentence. The wise, from action and agent, and from close taker and close taker, for other things that are different, such as what is produced and what produces, the goer and what is gone, the seer and what is seen, the characteristic and the basis, what is to be produced and what produces, and similarly, limb and what has limbs, quality and what has quality, measure and what is to be measured, etc., by examining the form of action and agent, the existence by own nature is prevented, and it should be known that it is the establishment of mutual dependence. The detailed examination of those should also be determined from the "Entering the Middle Way." If it is said that because the meaning of the close taker and the close taker of "Other things should be known" has already been understood, is it not unreasonable to establish it again? This is indeed true, however, in order to know that it is the main thing for the things that should be examined separately, the close taker and the close taker are established separately, and in this way, in the subsequent separate explanations, there will mostly be an examination of only these two. For that very reason, the Blessed One said, mind
