Because it is possible to apprehend afflictions by relying on them. Here, if something does not exist, the afflictions that rely on it cannot be apprehended, just like the afflictions of a barren woman's son and a barren woman's daughter. The causes of afflictions such as desire are existent, as it is said: The Blessed One told the monks that ignorant ordinary beings who are constantly immersed in seeing forms with their eyes become attached to pleasant objects. Having become attached, they generate desire. Having become attached, they accumulate actions arising from desire of body, speech, and mind. Thus, it is extensively taught. It should be said: If desire and so on exist in their own nature, then the aggregates, elements, and sense bases would exist. But they do not exist. Here, if this desire is completely examined, whether there is attachment or not, the discrimination ceases. In either case, it is not reasonable. As it is said: If desire exists before, and attachment without desire exists, then desire exists relying on that. If attachment exists, then desire exists. Desire, attachment, clinging, close clinging, and manifest clinging are different names. Attachment is the basis of desire. If before desire, there is non-desire, that is, something free from desire, then desire would exist relying on that attachment free from desire. In that case, it would be reasonable to say that if there is attachment, then there is desire. However, there is no such thing as attachment that is also free from desire, because it would follow that even Arhats have attachment. If that is the case, if there is attachment but no desire, then does that mean attachment does not exist? This is also not reasonable, as it is said: Even without attachment, how could there be desire? When there is attachment but no desire, how can desire without a basis be established when there is no attachment? Without a fruit, its ripeness does not exist. Here it is said: If again
