The earth is designated as a formless entity. Therefore, if form exists, then at that time the formless would be called space. When, as previously stated, it is reasoned that form itself does not exist, then what thing does not exist, space will appear. Here, because there is a knower who fully understands these, both existence and non-existence are indeed existent. If someone says this: If a thing does not exist, then to what will non-existence belong? The one who speaks thus, you are also the one who fully understands existence and non-existence, therefore, because you, the knower, exist to understand existence and non-existence, the objects to be examined, existence and non-existence, are also existent. This statement is also unreasonable. Because, existence and non-existence are contradictory dharmas. Who knows existence and non-existence? If there is a knower of the two, then it will also become existence and non-existence, and it is not existent either. If it exists, will the knower who fully understands become an existent or a non-existent? If it is considered to be existent, then, apart from the basis and characteristic, existence also does not exist. This refutation has already been shown. However, if it is non-existent, if a thing does not exist, then to what will non-existence belong? The refutation has already been stated for that. If something were to become the knower of these two, there is also no third thing that is different from non-existence and incompatible dharmas. Therefore, there is no knower of existence and non-existence. For that very reason, the Blessed One also said: He who knows things as non-existent, he will never be attached to all things. Whoever is never attached to all things, he touches the samadhi without characteristics. And, similarly: Those who think of the emptiness of dharmas, those children are those who have entered the wrong path. The emptiness of dharmas is expressed in letters, those are indicated by letters without letters. Those who think of the peaceful and most peaceful dharma, such a bodhisattva has never appeared. All elaboration is the discrimination of the mind,

Therefore, all dharmas are realized at Samye Monastery. Thus, and so on, it was proclaimed. Now, in order to conclude as it was taught, therefore, it is not the nature of space, not the nature of non-existence, not a characteristic, not a self-nature, thus it was proclaimed. Just as space is, so are the other five elements similar to space. The other five elements, such as earth, whatever remains of those, should also be known to be like space, free from entity and non-entity, as well as characteristics and self-nature, this is the concluding remark. Therefore, the self-nature of all things is thus abiding, and due to the darkness of ignorance, the eye of wisdom is diminished, therefore, from beginningless samsara, being accustomed to seeing entities and non-entities, etc., in a reversed way, seeing non-self-nature without reversal is the path to liberation, in accordance with nirvana, falling away from it. Those who are small-minded, regarding things, clinging to existence and non-existence, that view is to be observed, and they cannot see the pacified nirvana. Because of weak minds, those who manifestly cling to existence and non-existence cannot see the nirvana to be observed, nirvana is peaceful and has the nature of peace, free from all discriminations, is the true nature of the reversal of knowledge and the knowable, is the self-nature of emptiness. As it is said, in the Ratnavali it says: The non-existent goes to the bad realms, the existent goes to the good realms, because of truly knowing, not relying on the two, one attains liberation. Thus it is proclaimed. In the sutra, the Blessed One also said: Existence and non-existence, these two are extremes, purity and impurity, this is also an extreme. Therefore, abandoning the two extremes, the wise do not abide even in the middle. Existence and non-existence, this is contention, purity and impurity, this is also contention, with contention, suffering does not cease, without contention, suffering ceases. Thus it was proclaimed. Therefore, obtaining the supreme nirvana by the path of samsara, this is not existence. In the Clear Words by the teacher Chandrakirti, the commentary on the fifth chapter, Examination of the Elements, is completed. Here it is said that the skandhas, elements, and sources are existent.
