For that which does not exist, there is no action or agent. For example, like the son of a barren woman. For the agent, there also exists action, viewing, and the object to be viewed. Therefore, just as with a cutter, because there is action and an agent, there is indeed a viewer. It should be said: the object to be viewed and viewing itself do not exist, so how could there be a viewer? The object to be viewed and viewing are dependent on the viewer, and if one definitely analyzes: If not abandoned, the viewer does not exist; even if viewing is abandoned, it is so. Here, if there is something called a viewer, then it is either dependent on viewing or independent of viewing. If one posits a viewer who is dependent on viewing and not abandoned, then, is it an established or unestablished viewer who becomes dependent on viewing? For the established viewer, there is no dependence on viewing, because having become established, what need does the viewer have to depend on viewing? That which is established is no longer to be established. If one says that the unestablished viewer depends on viewing, then, because it is unestablished, like the son of a barren woman, there is no dependence on viewing. Thus, for the time being, not abandoned, that is, becoming a viewer by depending on viewing, does not exist. The viewer having abandoned viewing also does not hold, because there is no dependence on viewing, as has been said before. Therefore, in that way, when the viewer who has abandoned viewing and the viewer who has not abandoned viewing do not exist, if there is no viewer, then where are the object to be viewed and viewing? If there is no viewer, then the object to be viewed and the subject of viewing without a cause are impossible, so how could the viewer be established from their existence? Here it is said: the object to be viewed and viewing do exist, because they have results. For example, just as parents rely on parents, and the son is said to arise. Similarly, relying on the eye and form, it is said that consciousness arises. That is to say, relying on the object to be viewed and viewing, consciousness arises. When the three gather, then contact with defilements arises. What arises together with contact is feeling, and feeling is the cause of existence. Thus, the four limbs of existence, which have the cause of the object to be viewed and viewing, do exist. Therefore,

If, because they have results, there are both the seer and the seen. It should be said that if the four, such as consciousness, exist, then if these two exist, it is not so, because there is no seen and no seer. The four, such as consciousness, do not exist. Here, because there is no seer, the seen and the seer do not exist either, as has been said. Therefore, how can the four, such as consciousness, touch, feeling, and craving, which are called the four, such as consciousness, exist? Therefore, the four, such as consciousness, do not exist. Here it is said that they do exist, because they have results. Here, with craving as the condition, grasping, etc., grasping, existence, birth, old age, and death, etc., arise from the four, such as consciousness. Therefore, consciousness, etc., exist because they have results. It should be said that if the four, such as consciousness, exist, then grasping, etc., exist. When there is no seen and no seer, when the four, such as consciousness, do not exist, how can near grasping, etc., exist? Near grasping, etc., will not exist, that is the meaning. Now, in order to compare the distinctions of the remaining senses with seeing in the same way, it is said: Compare hearing and smelling with seeing, tasting and touching and mind, the hearer and the heard, etc., should be known as such distinctions. The Blessed One said: The eye does not see forms, the mind does not know dharmas, where the world does not enter, this is the truth of

Seen in decay and growth. Sometimes there is no coming and going, emptiness, and yogis see it as illusory. Thus it is said. Similarly, in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near Attendant, it is also said: The eye can see if it possesses everything, but the eye sees forms, and it cannot see if the conditions are not complete at night. Therefore, having and not having are conceptualizations. The eye relies on appearance to see lovely and unlovely various forms, and since it sees in this way by relying on appearance, therefore the eye never sees. Whatever lovely sound is heard, it never enters within. Going there is not something that can be pointed out, sounds arise due to the power of conceptualization. Thus it is said. Similarly, the sounds of songs, dances, and musical instruments are not something to be grasped. Like a dream, it is the cause of ignorance and attachment for the unskilled. The unskilled always cling to conceptualizations and will be destroyed, beings are like children, controlled by afflictions like slaves. Thus it is said. In the Clear Words by the teacher Chandrakirti, the commentary on the third chapter, Examination of the Senses. Here it is said: If the senses do not exist in this way, since the five aggregates are not refuted, and the senses are also included within them, therefore they should also exist. It should be said: If the aggregates exist, then they would exist in that way, but they do not exist. Among them, speaking with regard to the aggregate of form: Without the cause of form, form will not become an object. Without being called form, the cause of form will not appear. Among them, form is transformed from the elements. Its cause is the four great elements. Separated and transformed into something different from them, the form transformed from the elements, like cloth from a vase, will not become an object. Without being called form, that is, the cause of form separated from form will not become an object. Wanting to establish these two tenets, it is said: Without the cause of form, if there is form, then form will become without a cause. It will become a fault, because there is nothing that is without a cause. Like cloth that has become something different from a vase.
