Commentary. Here it says: Even if the goer, the going, and the going do not exist, even so, one must rely on what is thoroughly established in the scriptures and acknowledge that there are viewers, things to be viewed, and viewing, etc. As it is also said: In the Dharma Abhidhamma, it says: "Seeing, hearing, smelling, and tasting, Doing, touching, and mind, Are the six faculties, and their Objects are things to be viewed, etc." Therefore, viewing and so forth are inherently existent. It is not existent, because here The eye is the viewer because of seeing, And it is shown that form is its object. To show how viewing does not see form, it is said: That viewing is not its own nature, It does not see itself. What does not see itself, How does it see others? Therefore, viewing is not seeing its own nature, Because the action contradicts itself. Therefore, because it does not see its own nature, it will not see blue, etc., just like the ear, etc. Therefore, viewing is non-existent. Even if viewing does not see its own nature, even so, it sees others, like fire. Just as fire only burns the nature of others, but not its own nature. Similarly, viewing only sees others, but not its own nature, if you say so. This is also unreasonable, because of what reason? For the sake of thoroughly proving viewing, The example of fire is not capable. For the sake of thoroughly proving viewing, the example of fire that you have cited is not capable, meaning that it is not permissible, powerless, and unreasonable. Because of what reason? By measuring what has gone and what has not gone, It is answered together with viewing. Being together with viewing is answering together. The example of fire that you cited for the sake of thoroughly proving viewing is actually answering together with viewing, that is, refuting it. By what is it refuted? By saying, "By measuring what has gone and what has not gone." Because, just as one does not go to where one has already gone, nor to where one has not gone, nor to where one is measuring. Similarly, fire does not burn what has already been burned, nor what has not been burned.

Also, similarity should be expressed with words such as "not burning." Also, just as going, not going, and walking are not walking, temporarily looking but not seeing, and not seeing is also not seeing. Apart from seeing and not seeing, one will not become a knower who is seeing. Words such as "thus" should be expressed. Just as it is said, "A temporary goer does not go," words such as "A temporary burner does not burn" should be expressed, and words such as "A temporary seer does not see" should be expressed. Because, together with the example of fire, going, not going, and walking are similar to refutations, therefore it is unreasonable to say, "Like fire, seeing is established." Therefore, it is not established to say, "Seeing, like its own nature, is also not seeing other things." When it is seeing, at the time when it slightly does not see, it is not a seer. If it is said, "Seeing sees," how can that be reasonable? When it does not see even slightly like that, therefore it is not a seer, it is unreasonable for not seeing to become a seer. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say, "Seeing sees," like a pillar and so on. If, again, in the sense of composing verses, at the end of "is not a seer," one quotes the phrase, "The seer is by seeing," even so, when explaining, one should quote, "Seeing sees, how can that be reasonable?" Furthermore, here, saying "Because of seeing, therefore seeing, therefore is a seer," does it relate to the action of seeing and the nature of not seeing, or does it relate to a nature that is not seeing? It is explained that neither case is acceptable. "Seeing is not seeing itself; what is not seeing is not not-seeing." Temporarily possessing the nature of seeing, possessing the action of seeing, is not compatible with the phrase "and again because of seeing," because it would become two actions of seeing, and it would become two seers. Not possessing the nature of seeing also does not see, because it is separated from the action of seeing, like the tip of a finger. This is the intended meaning. When it is like that, "Seeing is not seeing itself; what is seeing is not not-seeing.
