The conditions such as eye and form do not directly produce consciousness, but are called conditions because they accomplish the action of producing consciousness. That action also produces consciousness. Therefore, the action of producing consciousness, combined with conditions, is what produces consciousness, not just the conditions themselves. For example, it is like the action of cooking rice, I think. Explanation: Action does not combine with conditions. If there is some action, then the conditions such as eye, through combining with conditions, produce consciousness, this is not the case. Why? If you want this action, do you want consciousness that has already arisen? Or not yet arisen? Or is arising? For consciousness that has already arisen, this is unreasonable. Because action accomplishes things, if things have already been accomplished, then what is the need for action? It is unreasonable for something that has already arisen to arise again. This has been explained in texts such as the "Entering the Middle Way." For consciousness that has not yet arisen, it is also unreasonable. Because this arising has no agent and is not the essence of reason. Because such a result would arise. For something that is arising, action is also impossible. Because there is no such thing as arising apart from what has already arisen and what has not yet arisen. As it is said: Arising is half-baked, arising is not arising. Or everything is arising, and itself would become existent. Thus it is said. Because of what? Because in this way, it is impossible for action to arise in the three times, so it is also non-existent. Therefore, action does not combine with conditions. Thus it is said. Just as one cannot say that a widow's son has a cow. This has been explained in texts such as the "Entering the Middle Way." If that is the case, then will it become not combined with conditions? Saying this is also unreasonable, as it is said: Action not combined with conditions does not exist. When action is not combined with conditions, how can there be a causeless thing that is not combined with conditions? Just as pūlu is the nature of wool.

English

The Ūmā school does not accept the nature of a reed mat. Therefore, action is not the cause of the arising of things. Here it is said: If that is the case, if there is no action, then the conditions will become the cause of the arising of things. It should be explained: Without action, there is no condition. When there is no action, how can conditions that are devoid of action, that do not possess action, and that are without cause, cause things to arise? If it is said that only those with action cause things to arise, It is explained: Action exists, but it is not so, it should be understood in context. The word "but" is to be grasped. If it is said that there is no action, how can the conditions themselves possess action? Just as the action of the arising of consciousness is described, so too should it be understood that things such as the action of inference can also be described in this way. Therefore, since things do not arise from action, the description of arising becomes meaningless. Here it is said: What need do we have for this analysis of conditions possessing action, etc.? Because, relying on conditions such as the eye, things such as consciousness arise. Therefore, the eye, etc., are conditions, and consciousness, etc., also arise from them. It is refuted: This is also unreasonable. Because they arise in dependence on these, therefore these are called conditions. As long as they do not arise, how are these not non-conditions? If it is said that consciousness arises in dependence on conditions such as the eye, therefore these are said to be the conditions of consciousness. Then, as long as the result called consciousness does not arise, how are these, the eye, etc., not non-conditions? The meaning is that they are inherently non-conditions. Just as sesame oil cannot be extracted from sand, so too will nothing arise from non-conditions. If someone thinks that something that was originally not a condition, relying on other conditions, will become a condition, this is also not permissible. Because, if one thinks that this non-condition is a condition, then that other condition itself must also be a condition.
