It is so. As it is also said in the *Sūtra Requested by Noble Ratnakūṭa*: Since the mind is not seen as it truly is, one should constantly seek the stream of mind, wondering from where the mind arises, and thinking thus: Does the mind arise from an object? And again thinking thus: Is the object other, or is the mind other? Or is the object itself the mind? If one temporarily thinks that the object is other and the mind is other, then the mind will become two. But if the object is the mind itself, then how can the mind see the mind? The mind cannot see the mind. Just as the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, and the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, similarly, the mind cannot see itself. Having thought thus, one should properly apply oneself in this way: That which is the non-abiding mind, which is not annihilation, not permanent, not lasting, not without cause, not contradictory to conditions, not from other, not from self, neither that nor not that—the stream of mind, the creeper of mind, the nature of mind, the non-abiding of mind, the non-moving of mind, the non-appearing of mind, and the self-nature of mind—one knows it in such a way that one does not disturb suchness. Thus one sees it. Just as suchness is, so one knows all those minds to be emptiness. Seeing in this way, son of good family, is the complete purification of the conduct of a bodhisattva's mindfulness of following the mind with the mind. So it is said. Therefore, in this way there is no self-awareness, and because there is no self-awareness, what is indicated by what? Furthermore, is that characteristic different from the basis of the characteristic, or is it not different? If, for the moment, it is considered different, then at that time, since it is different from the basis of the characteristic, like something that is not a characteristic, the characteristic will also become not a characteristic. Since it is different from the characteristic, like something that is not a basis, the basis will also not become a basis. Likewise, since the characteristic is different from the basis of the characteristic, the basis of the characteristic to the characteristic

it will also become without dependence. Therefore, it is not the subject of establishment, because it does not depend on its own nature, like a flower in the sky. If the nature and the basis of the nature are indeed non-different, then, because it is non-different from the nature, just like the self-nature of the nature, the very nature of the subject of establishment will be lost. Because it is non-different from the subject of establishment, the nature will also not become the self-nature of the nature, just like the self-nature of the subject of establishment. As it is said: If the nature is other than the subject of establishment, then the subject of establishment will become without nature. If there is no difference, then these you have clearly shown to be non-existent. Thus it is said. There is also no other way to establish the subject of establishment and the nature other than identity and difference. As it is said: If there is no possibility of establishing anything as either the same thing or a different thing, then how are these two established? It will be explained thus. If it is said that it is established in an inexpressible way, that is not the case, because if the distinction between each other is not fully understood, it will become what is called inexpressible. Where the distinction is not fully understood, there is no distinction between "this is the nature, this is the subject of establishment," so neither exists. Therefore, it is not established in an inexpressible way either. Furthermore, if there is cognition, who is the agent who completely cuts off the object? Without an agent, the act of doing and so on also do not exist, like the act of cutting off. If one thinks that the mind is the agent there, that is also not reasonable, because merely seeing the object is the function of the mind, while seeing the difference of the object is the function of the mental factors. Therefore, it has been promised: Seeing the meaning in that is consciousness, the difference of that is mental factors. How do the act of doing and so on become the act of doing and so on by achieving what kind of general action as a branch of achieving a main action? Here, for both knowledge and consciousness, there is no single main action. So what is it? Consciousness
