What is it to rely on the prior extreme? What is the posterior extreme? How does one not rely? In order to show these, this (content) is spoken. Among these, the past times are called the prior extreme in relation to the present entity of myself. The earlier part of the continuum from one life to another is the prior extreme. Not relying on it means not fixating on it through various forms of views, but because one sees the suchness of dependent arising as it is, one does not fixate on the appearance of things existing in other ways as other ways. Among these, eight views arise in other ways by focusing on the prior extreme, namely: whether the past has arisen or not, and that the world is permanent, etc. Whatever views there are, those are dependent on the prior extreme. The word "etc." therein means "and so on." Or, juxtaposing two views is for the purpose of approximate representation. These views are four, namely: Did I exist in the past? Did I not exist? Did I both exist and not exist? Was it neither existence nor non-existence? These four views are dependent on the prior extreme. Furthermore, there are four, as previously mentioned incidentally, "The world is permanent, etc. Whatever views there are, those are not dependent on the prior extreme." Among these, there is not much difference between the former set of four views and the latter set of four views. Even so, they are separately juxtaposed because they rely on a slight difference, which will be explained later. Among these, "The world is permanent" is not very different from "Did it exist in the past?" In one respect, the difference is that whatever four views there are that "the world is permanent" are generally dependent on the prior extreme. And "Did it exist in the past?" is to seize the prior extreme only for oneself and enter into it, but not for the external. Similarly, the differences should be stated for other views as well. Thus, for the time being, those eight views are dependent on the prior extreme. That prior extreme

Together with those views that take it as their object, it has already been discussed. Now, the later extreme is to be discussed. Regarding this, the body that will arise in dependence on the entity of the self in the present is called the later extreme. The later part that passes from one life to another is the later extreme. Not relying on it means not taking the forms of views as objects, because one sees the very nature of dependent arising as it is, so one does not cling to the appearance of things that exist in other forms as other forms. Regarding this, the eight views enter in other forms from aiming at the future extreme, such as: Future time other will be born and, not born world's end etc., whatever views there are, all of them, rely on the edge of the later extreme. Here, placing the two views close together again is for the sake of approximate representation. These views are four, such as: Will I be born in the future, or will I not be born? Or will I be born and also be born, and not be born and also not be born? Or will I neither be born nor not be born in the future? These four views rely on the later extreme. Are only those four views dependent on the later extreme? It is said: No. Then what is it? Looking at the edge of the world, etc., there are four other views that rely on the later extreme. Regarding this, the four views such as having an edge, etc., generally enter in dependence on the later extreme, while those such as will I be born in the future, etc., only enter in dependence on the later extreme for myself. This should be understood as the difference between the fifth set of four sentences and the first two sets of four sentences. Regarding this, first, in order to show how the first set of four views aimed at the past extreme is impossible, it is said: What happened in the past is not reasonable, what was born in previous lives, that is not this. It was said like this. Regarding this, if what was produced in past generations is what exists now, then at that time it would be reasonable to assume that this self was produced in the past?
