is the complete ripening of the aggregates. Death is the destruction of the aggregates of old age. Sorrow is the mental anguish associated with manifest attachment, with universal ignorance in the process of going and dying. Lamentation is the verbal expression aroused by sorrow. Suffering is harm to the five faculties. Displeasure is the occurrence of the undesirable. Disturbance is said to be the arising of much suffering and displeasure. Therefore, in the manner as previously stated, now the aggregate of suffering will occur solely. The term "thus" means by the power of cause and condition alone. The term "aggregate of suffering" refers to the collection and group of suffering, a synonym for the accumulation of suffering. The term "solely" means that which is separated from the nature of self and what belongs to self, and a synonym for that which is merely conceived by childish beings, the nature of suffering, unmixed with happiness. Because in this way, the limbs of existence arise from ignorance and so forth, therefore, the root of cyclic existence is formation. Therefore, the wise do not form; therefore, the unwise are the doers, because the wise see that. In this regard, cyclic existence is the root characterized by the entry of consciousness and so forth, that is, the main factor of the cause is formations. Therefore, the unwise form the root of cyclic existence—formations. Monks, the Blessed One said that a person associated with ignorance also forms what should be formed of merit, also forms what should be formed of non-merit, and also forms what should be formed of the immovable. Because in this way, the unwise are the doers, therefore, only the person who is associated with ignorance becomes the doer of formations, but the wise who see that, who have abandoned ignorance, do not. Why? Because they see that; if they see that, since all things are not perceived, relying on what would they act? There is not even a little. Therefore, because they see that, the wise

It is not the author. Because if there is ignorance, actions arise, and if there is not, they do not arise. Therefore, if ignorance ceases, all actions will not arise, because the cause is incomplete. If asked, from what does ignorance cease? If ignorance ceases, it is through cultivating it with wisdom. By cultivating the undeluded dependent origination, cultivating it as it is, ignorance will be completely abandoned. Thus, whoever correctly sees dependent origination will not cling to the self-nature of subtle things. Like an image, things will enter into self-nature emptiness. Thus, all things enter into self-nature emptiness, and there will be no clinging to any dharma. Without clinging, there will be no delusion. Without delusion, there will be no karma. Therefore, by cultivating dependent origination, one will enter into Suchness, and the yogi who sees Suchness will surely abandon ignorance. By abandoning ignorance, actions will cease. Thus, when ignorance ceases, how do actions cease? Thus, when this and that cease, this and that do not appear. The mere aggregate of suffering, thus, is truly extinguished. It should be known that when the earlier limb ceases, the later limb ceases. In this order, the yogi's aggregate of suffering, the collection of suffering, is separated from the unreal view of self and what belongs to self, separated from the doer and the feeler, self-nature emptiness, no longer arises, and is truly extinguished. As it is said in the Sutra of Arya Salu Jangpa, likewise, internal dependent origination arises from two things. What are the two? They are cause and connection, and condition and connection. Among them, what is the internal dependent origination that arises in connection with cause? That is, conditioned by ignorance are actions, conditioned by actions is consciousness, conditioned by consciousness are name and form, conditioned by name and form are the six sense sources,

Contact arises from the condition of the six sense sources. Feeling arises from the condition of contact. Craving arises from the condition of feeling. Grasping arises from the condition of craving. Becoming arises from the condition of grasping. Birth arises from the condition of becoming. Aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation arise from the condition of birth. Thus, a great mass of suffering comes into being. If ignorance does not arise, then formations will also not appear. Similarly, if birth does not arise, then up to aging and death will not appear. However, because ignorance exists, formations manifestly arise. Similarly, because birth exists, aging and death manifestly arise. Furthermore, ignorance does not think, 'I will manifestly produce formations.' Formations also do not think, 'We are manifestly produced by ignorance,' and similarly, birth does not think, 'I will manifestly produce aging and death,' and aging and death do not think, 'I am manifestly produced by birth,' up to this point. However, because ignorance exists, formations manifestly arise and come into being. Similarly, because birth exists, aging and death manifestly arise and come into being. Thus, internal dependent origination should be viewed as related to cause. How should internal dependent origination be viewed as related to conditions? It is because the six elements are assembled. Which six elements are assembled? They are earth, water, fire, wind, space, and the element of consciousness. From the assembly of these, internal dependent origination should be viewed as related to conditions. Among these, what is the earth element of internal dependent origination? Whatever, when assembled, manifestly establishes the solid substance of the body, this is called the earth element. Whatever performs the function of collecting the body, this is called the water element. Whatever digests the food, drink, clothing, and tastes of the body, this is called the fire element. Whatever performs the function of the body's breath moving inward and outward, that is the wind element.
