That (attaining) cessation is the manifestation of cessation. It is said extensively, such as: "Manjushri, whoever sees all dharmas as unreal, that is the one who cultivates the path." Also, in the Sutra of Adornment of the Sage Contemplative, it is said: Then, the Blessed One said to the youthful Manjushri: "Manjushri, because the noble truths are not seen as they truly are, sentient beings are inverted, that is, those whose minds are inverted, will not be liberated from this unreal cycle of existence." After saying this, the youthful Manjushri asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, by taking what as an object of focus, will sentient beings not be liberated from the cycle of existence? Please explain." The Blessed One said: "Manjushri, by taking 'I' and 'mine' as objects of focus, sentient beings will not be liberated from the cycle of existence. Why is that? Manjushri, whoever truly sees 'I' and 'other' will become an agent of action. Manjushri, ordinary people who are not endowed with learning, because they do not know that all dharmas are completely peaceful, therefore they fixate on 'I' and 'other'. Having fixated, they develop a sense of reality. Having developed a sense of reality, they develop attachment. They develop hatred. They develop delusion. Because they are transformed by attachment, hatred, and delusion, they engage in the three types of actions of body, speech, and mind. By imputing existence to what does not exist, they think: 'I am attached, I am hateful, I am deluded.' After ordaining in the teachings of the Tathagata, they think: 'I am endowed with discipline, I practice celibacy, I will be liberated from the cycle of existence, I will attain Nirvana, I will be liberated from all suffering.' They also think: 'These dharmas are virtuous, these dharmas are non-virtuous, these dharmas are to be abandoned, these dharmas are to be manifested, suffering should be fully understood, the origin should be abandoned, cessation should be manifested, the path should be cultivated.' Thereafter, whatever arises from all actions

will become foolish. All conditioned things are impermanent. All conditioned things are universally burning, thus he contemplates. Having contemplated thus, for that minding which is conjoined with disgust, preceded by the signless, will arise. He thinks thus: whatever is the complete knowing of these dharmas, that is the complete knowing of suffering. He thinks thus: what should I abandon, the cause of arising? He will think thus, and will be troubled by these dharmas, will be very ashamed, will be displeased, will be reproached, will be afraid and terrified, will be universally terrified. He thinks thus: being troubled by these dharmas, that is the actualizing of these dharmas, and this is the abandonment of the cause of arising, thus he contemplates. He thinks thus: I should actualize cessation, thus he contemplates, and having examined those two, that is the actualizing of the knowing of cessation. He thinks thus: the actualizing of cessation is this, thus he contemplates. He thinks thus: what path should I meditate upon? Thus he contemplates, and he alone goes to a solitary place, and when he remembers those dharmas, he will attain calm abiding. For that minding which is conjoined with disgust, calm abiding will arise for him. His mind will go forth towards all dharmas, will draw outwards and turn outwards. He will be troubled by those, will be very ashamed, and a manifestly displeased mind will arise. He thinks thus: I will be liberated from all suffering, and there will be nothing more to do later, and I have become an Arhat, thus he knows himself. When he is about to die, seeing himself being born, he will have doubt and hesitation about the Buddha's enlightenment. He will fall into hesitation, and having died, he will fall into the great hells. What is the reason for that? Because he examined the dharmas that have no arising, therefore he caused hesitation and duality towards the Thus-Gone One. Then, the youth Manjushri said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should I summarize these four noble truths? The Blessed One said:
