What are those faults? In order to show those faults in detail, (Verse) If one follows the view that things are of their own nature, then, according to you, things are without cause and condition. (Explanation) If you think that things exist by their own nature, then because own nature does not depend on cause and condition, things are without cause and condition, not having cause and condition, and you do not think that there is no cause. Even if one does not admit to thinking that there is no cause, (Verse) The result and the nature of the cause, the agent, the action, and the object, birth and cessation, are also harmful to the result. (Explanation) If one realizes that the pot exists by its own nature, then what is the need for causes and conditions such as clay for that which exists by its own nature? Therefore, those do not exist, and the result called pot is also unreasonable without cause. If those do not exist, then the agent potter, the agent wheel, and the action of making the pot also do not exist. Because those do not exist, birth and cessation also do not exist, and if birth and cessation do not exist, how can the result exist? Therefore, if one admits that things have own nature, then it is harmful to all those such as the result. Therefore, if one admits that things have own nature in that way, then everything is unreasonable for you. For us who speak of emptiness, all these are reasonable. Why? Because we think like this, (Verse) Whatever is dependently arisen, that is said to be emptiness, that is dependently designated, that is the Middle Way. (Explanation) Dependent arising, that is, depending on causes and conditions, sprouts and consciousness, etc., whatever arises, is not born of its own nature. Whatever is not born of its own nature is emptiness. As the Blessed One said: That which is born from conditions is said to be unborn, it has no nature of arising from that, that which depends on conditions is said to be empty, whoever knows emptiness is not negligent. And as the noble Lanka

From the *Entering the Middle Way*, considering that great wisdom is not self-arisen, I have extensively taught that all phenomena are without origination. Similarly, in the *Noble One Hundred and Fifty Verses*, it is said that all phenomena are empty, in the manner of being without inherent existence. That which is emptiness is dependent arising. Emptiness itself is established as dependent arising. For example, a chariot is designated as a chariot in dependence upon its parts such as wheels. That which is designated in dependence upon its own parts is unborn by nature. That which is unborn by nature is emptiness. That emptiness, characterized by being unborn by nature, is established as the Middle Way. Thus, whatever is unborn by nature, there is no existence, and because there is no destruction for what is unborn by nature, there is no non-existence. Therefore, being free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence, that emptiness characterized by being unborn by nature is the Middle Way, also called the trace of the Middle Way. Therefore, in this way, emptiness, dependent designation, and the Middle Way are different names for dependent arising itself. If analyzed, in all ways, because there is no phenomenon that is not dependently arisen, therefore, there is no phenomenon that is not empty. Whatever is not dependently arisen does not exist. As stated in the *Hundred Treatises*: "Wherever, whenever, there is no existence without dependence. Therefore, at no time, in no place, is there anything permanent." The sky and so forth are permanent, so ordinary people perceive. The wise do not see the meaning of these, even worldly people do not see it. The Bhagavan also said: "The wise will understand the phenomena of dependent arising, and will not rely on extreme views. Knowing phenomena with causes and conditions, there is no phenomenon without causes and conditions." Therefore, there is no phenomenon that is not dependently arisen, and depends
