This is called non-discrimination. Here it is said that if the ultimate truth is the nature of being free from elaboration, then that itself is sufficient. Why is there a need for other things that are not the ultimate truth, such as aggregates, elements, sense bases, noble truths, dependent origination, etc.? If it is not the ultimate truth, then it should be completely abandoned. What is the use of indicating what should be completely abandoned? It should be said that it is indeed true, but if one does not acknowledge the worldly ultimate truth, which has characteristics such as what is to be said, what says, knowledge, what is to be known, etc., one cannot indicate the ultimate truth. If it is not indicated, one cannot realize it, and if one does not realize the ultimate truth, one cannot reach the city of Nirvana. Therefore, to indicate this reason, it is said: Without relying on conventions, one cannot show the ultimate truth. Without realizing the ultimate truth, one cannot attain Nirvana. Therefore, in order to become the method of attaining Nirvana, just as a person who desires water needs a container, one must first unhesitatingly acknowledge how the conventional exists. Therefore, like this, if someone does not distinguish between the two truths, which are the nature of the conventional and the ultimate truth, and speaks of emptiness, then such a person, if he has a wrong view of emptiness, will destroy those of small wisdom, just like wrongly grasping a snake, or wrongly practicing a mantra. Yogis, merely because they do not understand the conventional truth, realize that arising is without self-nature, and therefore it is emptiness. Realizing the nature of the ultimate truth will not fall into the two extremes, because if it does not exist now, then what will exist at that time? Like this, because the self-nature of things was not observed before, it will not be thought of as non-existent later. Because there is no harm to things that are similar to worldly conventional images, there will also be no harm to actions and the results of actions, as well as dharma and non-dharma. Nor will the ultimate truth be clung to as truly existent, because it is only in things that are not of the nature of truly existent that one can see the results of actions, etc., and the self-nature of things.

Because everything does not exist. Even according to the view of those who claim that things have inherent existence, it is because they do not see karma and the results of karma, and all things such as dependent origination. If someone does not see the distinction between these two truths and sees conditioned things as emptiness, then because he sees emptiness, he will think that conditioned things do not exist. Or, he may regard some emptiness as real, and for the sake of its basis, he also imagines the nature of things. In either of these two cases, it is certain to be destroyed by wrongly viewing emptiness. Why is that? If someone thinks that everything is empty, and everything does not exist. Then, at that time, it becomes a wrong view. As it is said in the scriptures: If this Dharma is wrongly grasped, unwise people will be destroyed. Those who view it as non-existent in this way will sink into impurity. That's what it says. If you don't want to slander everything, then at that time, since things have already been verbally indicated, how can they become emptiness? Therefore, the meaning of no self-nature is not the meaning of emptiness. In this way, one will surely abandon emptiness. After abandoning it in this way, because of the lack of Dharma, one will surely fall into evil destinies because of karma. As it is said in the Ratnavali: Furthermore, if this view is wrongly held, a foolish and conceited wise man, because of abandoning it, has an unwholesome nature, and will surely go to Avici hell. That's what it says. In this way, if someone clings to emptiness as having no things, then the one who clings will be destroyed. If someone thinks that the emptiness of the Buddhas and the conditioned things that are its basis exist, then even so, because he has embarked on the wrong path to Nirvana, the teaching of emptiness becomes meaningless. Therefore, if emptiness is clung to as the essence of things, then the one who clings will also be destroyed. If something that is beneficial is grasped in another way, although it will not bring benefit, how can it cause harm? If seeds are sown upside down, then the sower will be destroyed.

If it is said that it is not so, therefore, in order to illustrate the meaning that the teacher intends to express, he gave the example: Just as improperly grasping a snake, or improperly practicing a vidyā-mantra. Just as grasping a snake with the power of medicine and mantra according to the instructions, it can attract a great mass of wealth. If one abandons the close application and grasps it, then the one who grasps it will be destroyed. Again, just as a vidyā-mantra that is diligently practiced according to the instructions benefits the practitioner, if it is practiced contrary to the instructions, it will destroy the practitioner. Similarly, here too, if one grasps emptiness as it is according to the close application, it will connect the one who grasps it with the supreme bliss of nirvāṇa. If one abandons the close application and grasps it, then surely, as it has been said before, it will destroy the one who grasps it. Because of this, improperly grasping emptiness destroys the one who grasps it, and even those with weak wisdom cannot grasp it correctly. Therefore, the weak cannot understand the depth of this Dharma, and the Thus-Gone One therefore turned away from teaching the Dharma. Because of grasping it perversely, the Dharma of the nature of emptiness destroys beings with weak wisdom and small courage. Precisely because of this, after manifesting complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, seeing that the faculties and Dharma of all beings are very profound, and knowing that the weak find it difficult to understand the meaning of this Dharma, therefore, the mind of the Thus-Gone One, the Bhagavan, turned away from teaching the Dharma. As it is said in the sutra: Then, not long after the Bhagavan manifested complete enlightenment, he thought to himself: I should not examine the profound Dharma that appears to be profound, it is not the domain of speculation, it is to be understood by the subtle, wise, and intelligent. If I teach it to others, others will not understand my meaning, that will cause me harm and discouragement, my mind will not be pleased, it is better for me to live alone in a solitary forest.
