Will running away in fear of trees liberate one from the fear of the king's consort? O Blessed One, it is not so. Why is that? O Blessed One, it is because that person, without a woman, generates the notion of a woman, which is not real, but is due to complete imputation. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, here some monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, generate the notion of desire where there is no desire, and, frightened by the fear of desire, completely seek to escape from desire; similarly, generating the notion of hatred where there is no hatred, generating the notion of delusion where there is no delusion, and, frightened by the fear of delusion, those who completely seek to escape from delusion should also be regarded in the same way. Now, do not say that those foolish people are practicing the path, for those people are called those who have entered the wrong path. Son of good family, just as, for example, that person creates something out of nothing, generating the notion of fear where there is no fear, so too, son of good family, ordinary people, not knowing the limit of desire, are frightened by the fear of the limit of the existence of desire, and seek to escape from the limit of desire. Not knowing the limit of hatred, which is the limit of nothingness, they are frightened by the fear of the limit of hatred, and completely seek to escape from the limit of nothingness. Not knowing the limit of delusion, which is the limit of emptiness, they are frightened by the fear of the limit of delusion, and thus completely seek to escape from the limit of emptiness. Now, do not say that those foolish people are practicing the path, for those people are called those who have entered the wrong path. Thus, it was extensively proclaimed. Here it is said: If the inverted view of clinging to "permanence" does not exist, then even temporary clinging does not exist. Clinging is clinging, it is the nature of things acting. For this, there must also be something that can establish the function of permanence, etc., and whether it is self or sentient being, there must also be an agent, and there must also be objects such as form.
