are not existent, like the son of a barren woman. The six objects, namely form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma, are existent. Therefore, since the objects are existent, you should say that the afflictions are existent. Form, sound, taste, and touch, smell and dharma, these six, four, namely desire, hatred, and ignorance, are considered to be existent. Because they arise from them, desire and so forth reside here, so they are four, namely the objects. That object also becomes six, namely form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma. What completely cuts off are the six faculties, because they are mutually distinct. Regarding that, this is here, that is there, because it can be definitely distinguished. Because it can appear as an image, it is form. Because it proclaims and shows meaning, it is sound. Because it can be inhaled and smelled, it is smell, because it does not go elsewhere from where it has gone. Because it can be tasted and experienced, it is taste. Because it can be touched, it is touch. Because it holds its own characteristic, or because it holds the supreme dharma, nirvana, it is dharma. These six are the basis. Of what? Of desire, hatred, and ignorance. Among them, because of opposition, it is desire, namely attachment and special infatuation. Or, because it makes the mind happy, it is desire. Because it causes aversion, it is hatred, namely complete annoyance. Or, because it causes the mind to be averse, it is hatred. Because of ignorance, it is ignorance, namely complete ignorance. Or, because it makes the mind ignorant, it is ignorance. Therefore, the six, such as form, are the basis of these afflictions, namely the objects. Among them, because of fabricating a lovely image on things such as form, desire arises. Because of fabricating an unlovely image, it is hatred. Because of wrongly fabricating permanence and self, ignorance will arise. These six as a basis are true. However, like those with cataracts seeing non-existent hairs and so forth, do you consider those desires and so forth that have become non-existent in nature to be existent?

In order to show that this is completely imputed, it is said: "Form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena, are merely imputed." The meaning of "merely" is that it is only imputed, without self-nature. If it is said that there is no self-nature, then how is it perceived? It should be said: Those perceptions are like a Gandharva city, like mirages and dreams. When they are like Gandharva cities and so on, merely perceptions arising from inversion, how can loveliness and unloveliness arise for things like illusory men and like images? This shows that the signs of loveliness and unloveliness arising from a reversed basis are also false. As it is said in the scripture: "The aggregates arising from self-grasping, that self-grasping is truly false, since its seed is false, how can the arising fruit be true?" Because the basis itself is inverted, the signs of loveliness and unloveliness are not only false, but also to show that through this reasoning, these two are also false, it is said: "Relying on what is loveliness established? The basis of unloveliness, without observing loveliness, does not exist, therefore loveliness is unreasonable." Here it is said that if there is something called loveliness, then because it is related to loveliness and depends on other things, it must depend on unloveliness, like long and short or this shore and the other shore. Then, relying on what unloveliness, and depending on what unloveliness, is loveliness established and distinguished? The unloveliness that is relied upon does not exist without loveliness, and without depending on loveliness, there is no unloveliness, meaning that without depending on loveliness, there is no unloveliness. The word "what" refers to the final unloveliness. The word "established" is connected to the preceding loveliness. Because in this way, establishing loveliness, there is no other related thing that depends on what is called unloveliness, therefore loveliness is unreasonable, just as without short there is no long, and without the other shore there is no this shore.
