There is a basis. If there is nothing, then nothing belongs to anything. Afflictions do not exist. Here, these afflictions, like drawings on a wall and ripening fruits, depend on a basis to arise. Therefore, these afflictions belong to something, and it is impossible without a basis. If that basis is analyzed as a self or mind, then that basis does not exist because it has already been negated. If there is no basis, then to whom do the afflictions belong? Because there is no basis, it does not belong to anything, as it is said. If there is no basis, then nothing belongs to anything. Afflictions do not exist. Here, we do not accept any basis for afflictions that has already been established. Anything that is designated as a basis, called "self," does not exist because it has no cause, like a mango tree in the sky. What then? Afflictions arise dependent on the mind that has afflictions, and that mind also arises together with the afflictions, as it is said. This is also unreasonable, as it is said. Observe the self, afflictions. Afflictions do not exist in the afflicted in five ways. Observe the self, the afflicted. Afflictions do not exist in afflictions in five ways. "Self" refers to the collection of characteristics such as form. Observing one's own body is observing the self, which is to engage in grasping at the aspects of self and what belongs to self. Just as: Not aggregates, not other than aggregates. Where there are no aggregates, there is no that. The Tathagata is not endowed with aggregates. When analyzed in these five ways, just as afflictions do not exist in the self, afflictions also do not exist in the afflicted when analyzed in five ways. Among them, that which makes it an affliction is the affliction. That which is afflicted is the afflicted. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that the afflicted is the affliction itself, because it would lead to the burner and the burned being one and the same. It is also unreasonable to think that the afflicted is other and the afflictions are also other, because if there is no dependence, the afflictions would become not arising from the cause of the afflicted.

It is precisely for that reason that, since the support and the supported, and all aspects related to them, do not exist, there is no afflicted one in the afflictions, and there are no afflictions in the afflicted one, nor is the afflicted one related to the afflictions. Thus, when analyzed in five ways, afflictions do not exist in the afflicted one. Just as afflictions with the cause of the afflicted one do not exist, so too, the afflicted one with the cause of afflictions, when analyzed in five ways, does not exist in the afflictions. In this way, the afflictions themselves are not the afflicted one, because it would be a fault of the agent and the action being the same. The afflictions are also not other, nor is the afflicted one other, because it would become a fault of being without dependence. There are no afflictions in the afflicted one, and there is no afflicted one in the afflictions, nor are the afflictions related to the afflicted one. Thus, just as when observing one's own body, the afflicted one also does not exist in the afflictions in five ways. Because of what reason it is so, therefore, afflictions and the afflicted one, which are established in mutual dependence, also do not exist. Here it is said, even if you have refuted the afflictions, even so, the causes of afflictions, the attractive and unattractive, and the inverted, are temporarily existent. Because they exist, the afflictions will also exist. It should be said, if the attractive and unattractive, and the inverted themselves exist, the afflictions will exist, for what reason? The attractive and unattractive, and the inverted, those are also not from their own nature, because they arise dependently, and because it would become annihilation. When it is not existent by its own nature in that way, the attractive and unattractive, and the inverted, depending on what do afflictions arise? Because its causes, the attractive and unattractive, and the inverted, do not exist, therefore the afflictions are indeed non-existent, that is what is thought. Here it is said, afflictions are indeed existent, because their objects are existent. Here also, for what does not exist, the object
