Venerable Subhuti, is a Tathagata, a fully enlightened Buddha, also like an illusion, like a dream? Is the Tathagata, the fully enlightened Buddha himself, also said to be like an illusion, like a dream? Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, if even nirvana is said to be like an illusion, like a dream, what need is there to mention other dharmas? Sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti, is nirvana also said to be like an illusion, like a dream? Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, if there were some other dharma that was even more distinguished than nirvana, I would also say that it is like an illusion, like a dream. Thus, these dreams and nirvana are non-dual, they are indivisible. This is how it is said. From the Clear Words of Master Chandrakirti, the commentary on the twenty-second chapter, "Examination of the Tathagata." Here it is said: The continuum of existence is indeed existent, because its cause exists. Here, karma arises from afflictions, and birth and death, which have karma and afflictions as their cause, also arise and cease in a continuous sequence from one to the next. This is also regarded as the cause of existence. It is usually stated as such. Its primary cause is afflictions, because those who have abandoned afflictions do not have them. Afflictions, such as attachment, etc., are existent, and therefore, the continuum of existence, which is the result, also becomes existent. It should be said: If afflictions, which are the cause of it, exist, then the continuum of existence also exists, but this is not the case. Why? Here, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have said: Attachment, hatred, and delusion arise from conceptualization. What is pleasing and displeasing, the opposite, arises entirely from dependence. Conceptualization is thought. Because it arises from conceptualization, it arises from conceptualization. Desire, your root is, known to arise from conceptualization. Because the verse appears in this way. Attachment, hatred, and delusion, it is said, arise from conceptualization. By merely grasping these,

The other afflictions are principal because they have these as their cause. Those three afflictions are: the attractive and the unattractive, and the inverted. They arise entirely from dependence. Of these, attachment arises from depending on the aspect of an attractive object, and hatred arises from depending on an unattractive one. Ignorance arises from depending on the inverted. Conceptual thought is a common cause for generating all three of these. Furthermore, how does ignorance arise from conceptual thought? It should be stated that the Blessed One said in the context of dependent origination: "Monks, ignorance has a cause, a basis, and a condition." "Monks, what is the cause of ignorance?" It is inappropriate mental engagement. Similarly, he said that impure mental engagement arises from ignorance. Therefore, ignorance arises from ignorance and conceptual thought. Therefore: Those that arise depending on the attractive and unattractive, and the inverted, those do not exist by their own nature; therefore, afflictions do not truly exist. If afflictions such as attachment were established by their own nature, then, since their own nature is not artificial and does not depend on others, they should not arise depending on the attractive, the unattractive, and the inverted. Since they do arise depending on the attractive, the unattractive, and the inverted, therefore these do not have their own nature; they do not truly exist, meaning that they do not exist by their own nature in the ultimate sense. Furthermore: The existence and non-existence of the self, cannot be established in any way. If that does not exist, how can the existence and non-existence of the afflictions be established? How the existence and non-existence of the self do not exist has already been explained extensively. Therefore, how can the existence and non-existence of the phenomena that depend on it exist? If the existence and non-existence of the self do not exist, then from what will their existence and non-existence not exist? Here, if you think, what will arise from the afflictions? The answer: Whose are these afflictions? It also becomes
