Alas, we have given up hope! Like this, we are covered by the extremely fine web of evil views, the tender shoots of which are conjectured by our own discriminations, such as the Vaiśeṣikas, the Sāṃkhyas, the Cārvākas, and the Parivrājakas; we have fallen from the correct path to the city of nirvāṇa; we have not crossed the extremely difficult path of the wilderness of saṃsāra; having abandoned the joy born of those who boast of clearly showing the correct path to heaven and liberation; we have taken refuge in the sun of the Tathāgata, who dispels all the darkness of other non-Buddhist tenets, who clearly shows the path that accords with heaven and liberation, who spreads the extremely bright rays of the sacred Dharma throughout all directions, who is devoted to opening the lotus of the minds of various types of disciples, who has become the sole stainless eye of those who are vessels for showing the meaning of the reality of things as they are, who has become the incomparable protector of all beings, since we have taken refuge in the pure maṇḍala possessing the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the unique qualities of a Buddha, and seek liberation, then now: "Having taken it, one takes it again, all things are empty, with emptiness, how can the Tathāgata be established?" etc., because you say that the nature of the Tathāgata is empty, we have given up hope of liberation! Therefore, arguing with you is enough to uproot the great medicinal tree of the Tathāgata! It should be said that for a person like you, we have given up hope! Like this, because you desire liberation, you have abandoned other non-Buddhist tenets, although you have taken refuge in the Bhagavan Tathāgata who truly reveals the truth, you cannot bear the lion's roar of no-self, which is extremely profound and unlike all non-Buddhist sayings, because of your own particular attachment, you have become impoverished, the path is disturbed by snakes of various evil views, people follow you in a perverse way, the wilderness of saṃsāra is endless.

It comes from being in accordance with and following that. The Thus-Gone One never speaks of the existence of self and aggregates. As it is said: "O venerable Subhuti, even the Buddha is like an illusion, like a dream." "O venerable Subhuti, even the dharmas of the Buddha are like an illusion, like a dream." We, from wherever, because of the faults caused by our being slandered in this way, never consider the Thus-Gone One to be without elaboration. Furthermore, the Thus-Gone One shows the absence of inherent existence, and wishing to express the meaning that is not inverted, he does not say "empty," nor does he say "not empty," nor does he make it two or not two. Although all these are not to be spoken, if they are not spoken, those who realize cannot realize the nature that abides as it is. Therefore, we abide in the truth of convention, and for the sake of the meaning of convention, we establish it backwards in front of the beings to be tamed, and we say "empty," and we say "not empty," and we say "both empty and not empty," and we say "neither empty nor not empty." For that very reason, it is said: "It should be spoken for the sake of establishment." The intention with which the Blessed One taught emptiness and so on should be understood from my examination. As it is said in the sutra: "You should know that this being is like an illusion, like a play, like a dream, without self, without sentient being, without life, without living being. Know that all phenomena are like a mirage, like a reflection of the moon in water. Because they do not know the nature of emptiness, peace, and non-arising, beings wander. Those with great compassion introduce them with skillful means and hundreds of reasons." Such things and so on are said. All these realizations are possessed by the Thus-Gone One who is without elaboration. Not only does the Thus-Gone One not possess the four, such as emptiness, but also: Where are the four, such as permanence and impermanence, in peace? Where are the four, such as end and endlessness, in peace? Here, the fourteen objects that the Blessed One did not prophesy
