Therefore, if the Tathagata existed prior to and independently of the aggregates, and then came to be dependent on them, that would be reasonable. For example, a donor who exists independently of wealth first, then receives wealth. Similarly, if a Tathagata existed independently of the aggregates, then he would now be dependent on the aggregates. If he came to be dependent on the aggregates, then after examining in various ways, if he did not depend on the aggregates, then there would be no Tathagata at all, because that would lead to causelessness. If he does not exist independently, then how could he take the aggregates? Because he does not exist at all. This is his thought. When he does not take any aggregates at all, it is unreasonable to say that he becomes a Tathagata by relying on the aggregates. When the Tathagata does not exist before taking the aggregates, and therefore does not take any aggregates at all, because no one takes them, the taking of the aggregates itself is not the taking of aggregates. To illustrate this, he says: Without taking the aggregates, how could there be taking? Thus he spoke. When no one takes, and therefore the taking of aggregates is not the taking of aggregates, because there is no taking of aggregates, there is no taker of aggregates at all. To illustrate this, he says: Without a taker of aggregates, there is no Tathagata at all. Thus he spoke. Therefore, in this way, as described above, having searched in five ways, if the Tathagata is neither the same as the aggregates nor different from the aggregates, how can such a Tathagata be established as a taker of aggregates? If the Tathagata is examined and sought, if he is not the same as the aggregates, that is, not one with the aggregates, nor different from the aggregates, that is, not distinct from the aggregates, if he is neither the same as the aggregates nor different from the aggregates, then having searched in five ways with the support and the supported and that which is associated with them, he does not exist, and how can such a Tathagata, who does not exist at all, be established as a taker of aggregates? Therefore, the Tathagata does not exist by nature. This analysis not only shows that the Tathagata does not exist, but also

Whatever is apprehended, that is not existent by nature. Whatever is apprehended, namely the five aggregates called form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, are also not existent by nature, because they arise dependently, and because they are extensively refuted in the analysis of the aggregates. If it is thought that even though apprehension is not existent by nature, it may arise from other things that have the nature of cause and condition, in order to show that this is also unreasonable, (the text says:) "What does not exist from my own entity, how can one expect it to exist from another's entity?" Just as a barren woman's son, who does not exist from his own entity, cannot be established by another's entity. Therefore, apprehension is also non-existent. In another way, whatever is apprehended, that is not existent by nature, because it depends on the apprehender, and because without depending on the apprehender there is no apprehension itself, therefore, apprehension that is established by its own entity is non-existent. If it is said that if apprehension is not existent by nature without depending on the apprehender, then it must be dependent on the apprehender, is that so? Even so, (the text says:) "What does not exist from my own entity, how can one expect it to exist from another's entity?" How can apprehension, which is not established and existent from my own entity, exist from the entity of another, the apprehender? Therefore, apprehension is also non-existent. Now, in order to further reveal the meaning of how it has been thoroughly proven, (the text says:) "Therefore, what is apprehended and the apprehender are empty in all respects." That is to say, when analyzed in all ways, what is apprehended is empty, without inherent existence, and the apprehender is empty, devoid of inherent existence. Now, if apprehension is empty, then the Tathagata is also empty, how can that be reasonable? To posit a non-existent Tathagata by means of a non-existent apprehension is not possible. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the Tathagata is posited in dependence on the aggregates. Here it is said, Alas!
