has attained the state, and the Bhagavan who has attained the wisdom of omniscience, knows and comprehends completely as it is the suchness of all dharmas, therefore he is called Tathagata. Therefore, if the continuum of existence does not exist, then the Tathagata will also not exist, because it cannot be considered that the state of Tathagata is attained through one birth. Therefore, the continuum of existence exists, because the Tathagata exists, so it is said. It should be said that whoever, due to being obscured by very great ignorance, even if prevented by various manifestations, still cannot be prevented and destroyed due to long-term habit. You understand this very great ignorance as the continuum of existence continuing without interruption, and understand it as very long. If here, the so-called Tathagata exists in the manner of self-nature, then due to long-term manifestation, the continuum of existence will exist. However, the so-called Tathagata is not observed as the self-nature of things, but only due to the great darkness of your ignorance that makes the eye of wisdom blurred, just like seeing two moons, mistakenly observing the Tathagata. When the Tathagata himself does not exist in the manner of self-nature, how can there be his continuum of existence? In order to explain that the Tathagata does not exist in the manner of self-nature, it is said (in the sutra): Not aggregates, not different from aggregates, without aggregates there, without that there, the Tathagata is not with aggregates, what is the Tathagata? If the so-called Tathagata is something, then it is the self-nature of the aggregates, that is, the self-nature of the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, or the self-nature of the five aggregates of morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the knowledge of liberation, or something different from these two. Because the former five aggregates themselves are the cause of being nominally established as sentient beings, this analysis should be done.

Thus it is established. The latter is not the case, because these are not pervasive, and are included in the former. If the Tathagata is different from the five aggregates, then does the Tathagata have aggregates? Or do the aggregates have the Tathagata? If, like Devadatta having wealth, the Tathagata has aggregates, then when examined in all ways, it is not existent. How so? In this regard, first of all, the aggregates themselves are not the Tathagata. Why? If firewood is fire, the agent and the action will become one. Thus it is said. If any grasping is Buddha, the agent and the action will become one. This should also be applied here. Similarly, if the aggregates are self, they will become subject to birth and destruction. Thus it is said. If the aggregates are Buddha, they will become subject to birth and destruction. This should also be applied here. Thus, first of all, the aggregates are not the Tathagata. Now the Tathagata is also not different from the aggregates, why? If fire is different from wood, it will also arise without wood. Thus it is said. Similarly, because it does not depend on another, it will not arise from the cause of burning. The effort will become meaningless. If so, there will be no action either. Thus it is said. Here too, it should be applied thus: If grasping is other than the Buddha, it will also arise without grasping. Thus it is said. Similarly, because it does not depend on another, it will not arise from the cause of grasping. The effort will become meaningless. If so, there will be no action either. It should be applied thus. Similarly, if it is different from the aggregates, it will be without the characteristics of the aggregates. This should also be applied. Because there is no otherness between the aggregates and so forth and the Tathagata, it is not reasonable to say that the Tathagata has aggregates, and it is also not reasonable to say that the aggregates have the Tathagata. This explanation of the two alternatives is: Here, I am not in the aggregates, nor are these aggregates in me, why? If there were otherness, this conceptualization would arise, but because there is no otherness, this conceptualization arises. This is what is said in the Entering the Middle Way. The Tathagata
