The treatise called "Examination" is a commentary on the Shupa's commentary on the Root Treatise of the Sammitīya School. Here it is said: Time exists by its very nature, because it is the cause of arising and ceasing. Here, sprouts and so on arise and grow in dependence on certain times, and they decay and completely decay in dependence on certain special times. Even if there is an aggregation of causes and conditions, it is not so at all times. Therefore, time exists, because it is the cause of arising and ceasing. It should be said: If arising and ceasing themselves exist, then time would become the cause of arising and ceasing, and it would not exist. Because it has been shown how it does not exist. Does destruction exist without arising? Or does it not exist together? Does arising exist without destruction? Does it not exist together? Thus it is said. Here, if arising and ceasing were to exist, either existing without each other, or existing together, upon analysis, neither of the two is possible. How so? Because it has been shown that destruction, how does it exist without arising, that is, without being born. Destruction without arising, how could it exist? Without being born, one would die. Destruction does not exist without arising. Thus it is said. Destruction, how could it exist without arising? The expression "how could it" indicates that it is known to be utterly impossible. How could it exist? The intention is that it does not exist. Furthermore, if destruction were to exist without arising, what fault would there be? It is said: Without being born, one would die; if the unborn were to die, the unborn would not even see death. Therefore, it is not reasonable for destruction to exist without arising. Here, it should be known that the first half of the verse is the proposition, the middle part is the proof, and the last part is the conclusion. Thus, for the time being, it has been shown that destruction without arising is unreasonable. Next, it is shown how destruction does not exist together with arising either.

Why? When destruction and arising are simultaneous, How can existence be true? Death and birth at the same time, The nature of existence is not there. It is said. Suppose destruction and arising are simultaneous, that is, they exist simultaneously at the same time, In this way, death and birth will occur at the same time. These two contradictory things, like light and darkness, cannot exist simultaneously at the same moment. Therefore, it is impossible for destruction and arising to be established simultaneously. Thus it abides. When destruction does not arise, or simultaneous establishment does not exist, similarly, arising without destruction, or simultaneous establishment does not exist, in order to show this principle. When arising has no destruction, How can existence be true? Impermanence of all things, At no time is there no. It is said. It is unreasonable for arising to have no destruction, because things are the nature of arising, the nature of birth, and for these things, impermanence is never absent. So what is it? It exists at all times. All things at all times, The nature of aging and death, Who are aging and dying, What is the thing that does not abide? It is said. When all things are constantly associated with impermanence, then where can there be a state of being free from destruction? Therefore, arising without destruction is impossible. In this way, for the time being, arising without destruction does not exist. These remaining analyses, because they have already been analyzed when analyzing conditioned phenomena, will not be analyzed again. Some people argue that destruction has a cause, because it is a characteristic of conditioned phenomena, just like arising. After stating such an argument, If someone says that the characteristics of the final (dying) consciousness and mental factors are uncertain, then he is saying something unreasonable. Because its destruction is also caused by arising, it has a cause. And, because it is the same as what needs to be proved, there is no uncertainty. In addition, the essence of the nature of things is arising from what has never arisen, which is called arising. Therefore, in substance
