Moreover, the effect is not something other (than the cause). However, (some) insist that the cause itself ceases and abides in the nature of the effect. Even so, if the cause ceases and the effect arises, then the cause will be completely transformed. The previously arisen cause will also arise again. If one thinks that when the cause ceases, the effect arises, and that effect is only of the nature of the cause, then, the cause will be completely transformed, just as a theatrical performer changes one set of costumes and puts on another. The cause is merely transformed, and it is not the arising of an effect that did not exist before. Therefore, if the cause becomes permanent, then permanent things are also not existent. As it is said in the *Śataśāstra*: "Whatever, wherever, whenever, cannot exist without relying (on something else). Therefore, at any time, in any place, there cannot be any permanent thing." Furthermore, regarding this idea, the previously arisen cause will also arise again. It is not reasonable for something that has already arisen to arise again, because there is no need, and it would lead to the fault of being endless. If one thinks that the self-nature by which something exists is not what arises, but only the self-nature by which something does not exist is what arises, this is also unreasonable, because the inherent nature of the cause does not abandon the inherent nature of the cause, and it is called the effect, only the name is different. Even if the state is different, it cannot prove that the substance is different. In the state of the effect, the nature of the cause is completely abandoned, which can be expressed by the name of the effect. Therefore, what is this saying that the cause abides in the nature of the effect? Furthermore, if the cause produces the effect, then does it produce it in a state of cessation or non-cessation? And is the effect produced in a state of being already arisen or not yet arisen? Either way is unreasonable. To illustrate this, (it is said in the scripture:) "How does something that has ceased and perished produce an effect that has already arisen? And how does a cause that is related to the effect produce (it) while abiding?" Thus it is said, if one temporarily thinks that the cause that has ceased, disappeared, and perished produces the effect that has already arisen, that is, something that exists and is possessed, that is unreasonable. Why?

If asked: How can a cause that is extinguished and non-existent produce an effect? If it can produce an effect, then even a barren woman's son could produce a son. If the effect already exists and is possessed, and does not depend on being produced, how can the cause produce it? If it is said that because it lacks the ability, the extinguished cannot produce it, then what? Is it thought that the effect is produced only by the existence of the cause? The answer is: It is said: The cause connected to the effect, how can it produce even if it exists? The cause connected to the effect, that is, the truly connected cause, possessing an unchanging nature, how can it produce even if it exists? Here, if the cause transforms, then it becomes another cause. Understanding the cause as the nature of the cause, it must undoubtedly transform. Whatever does not transform does not possess the nature of a cause, how can it produce when connected to the effect? Because the effect already exists. However, since the effect already exists and cannot be produced, is it that only the cause that is not connected to the effect, and is not truly connected, can produce the effect? The answer is: This is also unreasonable. It is said: If the cause is not connected to the effect, what effect can it produce? It is said that if it is asserted that the cause is not connected to the effect, then what effect can it produce now? Because it is not connected, can it produce all effects, or can it not produce even a small part? Because there is no connection. This is the intention. Furthermore, here, if the cause can produce the effect, does it produce the effect by seeing it or not seeing it? Neither is reasonable. It is said: The cause does not produce the effect by seeing or not seeing. So it is said. Among them, if one thinks that it produces by seeing, it is unreasonable. Why? Because only what exists can be seen, and what does not exist cannot be seen. If it is said that it exists, then it should not be produced, because it already exists. Thus, for the time being, the cause cannot produce the effect by seeing it. It cannot produce it without seeing it either.
