In the Sutra of Skill, it is said: If phenomena had any inherent nature, then the Buddhas and Shravakas would know it. Real phenomena would not pass away into sorrow, and the wise would never be without action. Thus it is said. Similarly, the Dharma has been taught hundreds of thousands of times, and even though hundreds of thousands of Buddhas have passed away, the Dharma and letters are inexhaustible, because there is no birth, therefore there is no end. Thus it is said. Similarly, when the Tathagata appears, a Victorious One named Maitreya will appear, and this earth will be covered with gold. At that time, where will his appearance be? And so on, it is said. In the Clear Words composed by the teacher Chandrakirti, the commentary on the nineteenth chapter, Examination of Time. Here it is said: Time is existent, because it is a co-operative condition for the arising of results. That which is non-existent is not the nature of a co-operative condition, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, time is existent, because it is a co-operative condition. Here, the sprout arises dependent on the collection of causes and conditions such as seed, earth, water, fire, wind, space, and time. Even though there is a collection of causes and conditions such as seed, it does not arise because the difference of time is not near. Just as it is with external objects, so it is also with the internal self. As the Bhagavan said: The actions of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of kalpas. When they are gathered and the time has come, they will naturally ripen into fruit. Thus it is said. Because it is so dependent on time, therefore, whatever is a co-operative condition for the arising of sprouts and so on, that which is called time, is existent. It should be said: If the arising of fruits such as sprouts is existent, then time would become the cause of the co-operative condition, but it is not existent. How so? Here, when one infers the arising of fruits such as sprouts from the collection of causes and conditions such as seed, is the fruit existent in the collection, or is it non-existent in the collection, from which does it arise? What will happen from that?

If one thinks there is an entity, then it is not permissible, in order to show this reason. (If) arising from the collection of causes and conditions, if there is a result in the collection, then how does it arise from the collection itself? It is said that if there is a result from the collection of causes and conditions, then how can that which exists in the collection be produced by it? For example, the yogurt in the bowl is not produced by the bowl. Furthermore, that which exists is already established, just as an already established vase is in front of you, it does not need to depend on arising. If it is said to be for manifestation or coarsening, that is not so, because this question has already been answered above. Fire does not come from elsewhere, and there is no fire in the wood. Such words have already been answered. If one thinks that there is no result in the collection, this is also unreasonable, in order to show this reason. (If) arising from the collection of causes and conditions, if there is no result in the collection, then how does it arise from the collection itself? It is said that if there is no result in the collection of causes and conditions, then how can the collection of causes and conditions produce a result? Because it does not exist, like sesame oil in sand. Therefore, it is impossible, if there is no result in the collection, then how does it arise from the collection itself? It is said that the result is not produced from the collection itself. Furthermore, if there is a result in the collection of causes and conditions, if it can be grasped in the collection, then the collection itself cannot be grasped. That which exists in a certain place can be grasped there, like yogurt in a bowl. That which does not exist in a certain place cannot be grasped there, like sesame oil in sand. If things exist, but because they are very subtle, very close, very far, the senses are disturbed, the senses are harmed, obstructed by tangible matter, the body becomes invisible, because they are not kept in mind they become subtle, the eye medicine stick in the eye, the movement of the sun, Mount Sumeru
