What is not obtained is the future. Thus, if from the perspective of the cause of the nature of things, the three times are considered, then they also exist. Therefore, their cause, the nature of things, also exists. It should be said: If the three times themselves exist, then the nature of things, which is the cause for establishing the three times, should also exist, but this is not the case. To explain how it does not exist, (the text says:) The present and the future, if they depend on the past, then the present and the future, will exist in the past time. Here, if for a moment the present and future times exist, then do they exist depending on the past time, or not depending on the past time? If they are established depending on the past, then at that time they must exist in the past time. Because whatever does not exist in a certain place does not depend on it. For example, one's own daughter being a widow, one's own flower in the sky, and one's own sesame oil in the sand, these are independent. If someone says that the light of a lamp itself does not have darkness, but it depends on the opposite (darkness), then this is not the case, because that also needs to be proven. Therefore, here, if in order to establish dependence, it is thought that the present and future times exist in the past time, then, because they exist in the past time, like the self-nature of the past time, they will also become the past time itself. Therefore, they will not become the past either, because if it is said that what has passed from the present is the past, and what has not been obtained is the future, then when the present and the future do not exist, what will become the past? Therefore, they will not become the past either. If one wants to avoid the faults as stated above, (the text says:) The present and the future, if they are not there, how can the present and the future depend on it? If it is thought that the present and future times do not exist in the past time, then, even so, because they do not exist there, like a lotus in the sky, dependence does not exist. If, according to the views of the proponents of time, time exists, then it is necessary to depend on it.
