When saying this, those who here assert the existence of time establish the doctrine that time is something other than things and is permanent, which is a statement of refutation. They say that, in ultimate truth, time is other than things and is permanent, while the impermanent nature of things such as moments, instants, and brief periods exists in relation to time as a conventional designation. For example, just as a completely pure crystal ball appears in various colors due to the distinctions of various color conditions being closely present, and just as a single type of fruit tree that is ripening changes into various colors due to the distinctions of various ripening actions being closely present. Thus they say. In response to this, the commentator says in verse: Here it is said that, in our school, things that depend on other things and are relative are referred to as moments and so forth. In our school, from the doctrine established by the Abhidharma itself, the extremely rapid movement of an atom towards another atom is called a moment. Therefore, things that depend on other things and are relative are referred to as moments and so forth, and that is a property of things, not of time. If you also wish to conventionally designate time as dependent on things such as moments, then that is exactly what we accept. However, if you wish to assert that there is something else permanent that depends on things such as moments in ultimate truth, then that does not exist. Thus, two examinations are shown. Among them, in order to temporarily show the first examination, it is said that if time depends on things, and in conventional terms it is called a thing, then that is exactly what is accepted. If you say that time in conventional terms is the very property of things such as moments, then that is exactly what we accept. In order to show the second examination: If in ultimate truth, even things themselves are not established, how can non-existent time exist? That does not exist. Thus, the meaning of this verse is explained. In ultimate truth,

Even things like moments, since there is no term for them, and because there are no things, how can something else that depends on time and is permanent exist? Like birth, for example. That is a phenomenon of conditioned things, not of time. From the many continuities of conditioned things arising, the understanding arises that it is long, and from the few continuities of conditioned things arising, the understanding arises that it is fast. For example, when many continuities of a butter lamp arise in a long sequence, it is called long, and when few continuities arise close in time, the understanding arises that it is fast. Like that, this is also a phenomenon of conditioned things, not of time. Therefore, since knowing what is earlier, etc., is a phenomenon of conditioned things, there is no reason, so how can time exist? Because the reason shown to establish that is not established, that is what is meant. Even in conventional terminology, knowing what is earlier and later, etc., is a phenomenon of conditioned things, not of time. Therefore, in order to establish that the time of the opponents is only the nature of substance, because there are signs of time, such as earlier and later, etc., since the reason shown is not established, how can time ultimately be the nature of substance? That is what is meant. If knowing what is earlier, etc., is a phenomenon of conditioned things and not a phenomenon of time, how is that known? The opponents say, from what is that reasonable, how is that known? That is a question. In response to that, it is said that it is because there is no inference that shows time to be permanent and singular. To the opponents, if you infer from the absence of an inference that shows time to be permanent and singular, then you will know that knowing what is earlier, etc., is a phenomenon of conditioned things and not a phenomenon of time. In order to show that very inference, it is said that even in name, knowing what is earlier, etc., is not the cause of time being permanent and singular, because it is knowing, just like knowing forms, etc. Those are the subject, the phenomenon to be established, the phenomenon of establishment, and the example, to be combined in order. For example, knowing forms, etc., is knowing.
