Even a moment does not truly exist. If something truly existed, then it would not be past, nor would it be future. Why? Because it truly exists. Because it is only truly existing, it is also not present. Why? Because "suchness" is said to be entering, and only entering is called the present. If it truly exists, then it is established, not entering, because not entering is not the present. Therefore, what? By what should time be definitely grasped? Other than the conditioned things, there is no truly existing thing. How can something that does not exist be grasped? What cannot be grasped cannot be established as time. Therefore, how can time be established without grasping? If it can be grasped, then it should be established. It is said that this is what is meant. How can time, which cannot be grasped or perceived in any way, like a flower in the sky, be established as time? If it is thought that the collection of conditioned things, which can be grasped conventionally, is itself time, then time should be established for what can be grasped. But you think that time is something other than the collection of conditioned things, something that truly exists in the ultimate sense. Therefore, the meaning of such words is not truly existing, and what cannot be grasped in any way cannot be established as time. In this way, this shows that measures such as moments are the dharma of conditioned things, of the complete cessation of other actions such as the movement of the sun, and not of time. Therefore, the basis of the argument is not established, and there is no example. This shows that the dharma to be proven by the opponent, measures such as moments, is the dharma of conditioned things, and not the dharma of time. Therefore, apart from the complete cessation of other actions such as the movement of the sun, there is no independent nature of time. Therefore, the basis of the opponent's argument, "because it has measures such as moments," is not established, and the opponent's example, like grains, etc., which should be understood, is also non-existent in the ultimate sense, and is not established. "Do not grasp in the non-abiding time," it is said.

Some say that, in this matter, all things that are definitely existent can be measured. For example, this tree is tall, this river is long, this person is short, this elephant is big, and so on. But time is not so definitely existent, so it cannot be measured. This is the explanation of the commentator, the Venerable Buddhapalita. If time were definitely existent like trees, etc., then it would also be measurable by "tall" etc. But, because there is nothing in time that can be measured and is completely definite, it cannot be measured. Therefore, the opponent's argument is not established because it lacks a measure. Others say that it is not good, because even non-material and indefinite things can be measured. This is the explanation of the commentator himself, the Venerable Buddhapalita, refuting that uncertain statement, considering it not good. For example, things like sound and action, which are non-material and indefinite, can also be said to be small or loud, small or large actions, or that they are good or bad, and these can be measured. Therefore, in order to be measurable, must it be definitely existent like trees, etc.? Or, in order to be measurable, must it be indefinitely existent like sounds, etc.? This is uncertain, so that is not good. Sixty-fourth chapter. Here it is said that time is permanent, because within it there are moments, instants, short periods, etc., and past, future, and present, etc. These are differences arising from various different proximities, like a jewel, or like the difference of ripening leading to ripening. Previously, the Madhyamikas thought that moments, instants, short periods, etc., are the differences of the arising and ceasing dharmas of conditioned aggregates, so they are impermanent, therefore not time. Apart from that, there is nothing definitely existent that can be considered the essence of time, therefore time is not independent of things, nor is it permanent.
